Ethan Martin: Full Scouting Report on Prospect Dealt for Shane Victorino

Ryan RudnanskyJun 4, 2018

Prospects tend to be overlooked when they are traded for a bigger name, but they can emerge as steals down the line.

The Philadelphia Phillies are hoping that's the case with 23-year-old right-hander Ethan Martin.

The Phillies acquired Martin and fellow right-hander Josh Lindblom from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday in exchange for veteran outfielder Shane Victorino, per Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown via Twitter.

Martin was ranked the 17th-best prospect in the Dodgers organization after the 2011 season by Baseball America. He's failed to live up to lofty expectations as a 2008 first-round pick, in large part due to his struggles with command, but he's bounced back in 2012, and he's still relatively young.

Martin has been solid for Double-A Chattanooga this season, posting a 3.58 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 112 strikeouts in 118 innings. He still has averaged 4.7 walks per nine innings, but that's a vast improvement over his 6.5 walks per nine innings last year with Chattanooga.

Martin's top two pitches are his fastball (which generally runs from 93 to 95 mph) and a power curve that's been ranked as the best in the Dodgers farm system, per Baseball America.

Both are strikeout pitches. And despite being a hard thrower, he rarely gives up home runs. He gave up just five long balls this season.

The main thing with Martin is harnessing his command. He undoubtedly has the stuff and the potential to be a solid major league pitcher, but that doesn't mean anything if he continues to give batters free passes. In that regard, his lower walk rate (key word: "lower") is a sign of progress and makes him a prospect to watch down the road.
