Will Cliff Tucker Get More Playing Time for the Terps?

Jarrett CarterFeb 22, 2009

Just a few weeks ago, Cliff Tucker was lamenting his status as bench warmer extraordinaire for the Maryland Terrapins. I even went so far as to say that he would have a better time transferring and building his pro prospects at a mid-major program that would surely treasure his arrival.

And now, he’s the talk of the ACC. Greivis Vasquez may have been Mr. DAGGER! against the North Carolina Tar Heels, but Terrapins fans should be holding up “Cliff Tucker is Afro Samurai” signs at the Duke game, as he drew blood from behind the arc time and time again.

Maybe there’s just something about playing the Tar Heels, but Cliff Tucker clearly sees red when it comes to Carolina Blue. In his last outing in Chapel Hill, Tucker went for 18 points in 20 minutes. Over the next three games, he scored no more than eight in a contest.

He’s only scored in double-figures four times this season, has only played more than 20 minutes three times, and is only a sophomore. In the three games he played 20 minutes or more, he has a scoring average of 16.6 points per game, which is a strong contrast to the 5.2 he averages for the season.

Gary Williams may not be a good recruiter, but no one has ever trashed his ability to coach. And if that holds true, we can look forward to a lot more Cliff Tucker in the Terps’ lives down the stretch.
