New York Giants: Terrell Thomas Injures ACL Again, Status Unknown for 2012

Doug RushJun 3, 2018

When the Giants re-signed cornerback Terrell Thomas after the 2011 season, they were hoping that he would be back to full strength and provide depth at the position.

Unfortunately, Thomas has suffered a major setback in training camp, as he has injured the same knee in which he tore his ACL last season, according to Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger.

According to Garafolo, a source close to the situation said that Thomas might have a partial tear, but not a full tear of the ligament, which may require arthroscopic surgery.

Thomas injured the knee while covering Domenik Hixon in a one-on-one drill on Sunday and slipped on the field.

The 27-year old Thomas signed a four-year deal worth roughly around $28 million back in March and spent so much time rehabbing his injury that he suffered last preseason when he collided with Jason Pierre-Paul in a game against the Chicago Bears.

Following the surgery, Thomas missed the entire 2011 season recovering from the surgery and missed the Giants Super Bowl run.

After slipping, Thomas told head coach Tom Coughlin that his knee seemed fine, but then it started to swell up, which led to the team sending Thomas to Manhattan for further testing.

If Thomas does in fact need surgery to repair his knee, his status for the 2012 season is unknown.

The injury does put more pressure on 2011 first-round draft pick Prince Amukamara to step up and live up to the expectations set upon him when drafted last April.

If the Giants are lucky, maybe Thomas only misses the beginning of the season and can resume playing during the middle of the season.

But after tearing his ACL last August and going through an extensive rehab process to get back into the Giants starting lineup, his road back onto the field has taken a major detour.

The Giants can only hope for better news going forward as they prepare to defend their 2011 Super Bowl Championship starting in little over a month.

Right now, the news of the Thomas injury is still in the early stages, so once more information has been announced, we'll all have a better understanding of what we're dealing with in regards to Thomas' injury.

Stay tuned, Giants fans, and hope for the best.
