Olympic Volleyball 2012: Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Day 3 Results

Tim KeeneyJun 2, 2018

Another day, another beach volleyball win for Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh.

Yawn.

In their second match of Olympic group play, the duo that is actually only ranked third in the world rolled to a straight-set win over Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova of the Czech Republic (via USA Volleyball):

In case you were wondering, that extends what can only be described as a ridiculous run by May-Treanor and Walsh over the years.

Dating back to the start of the 2004 Olympics, the dominant twosome is now 16-0 in Olympic play. But what's even more daunting than the overall record is the fact that they've yet to lose a set—32 up, 32 down for the two-time Olympic champions.

With that being said, the streak was in doubt at times Monday.

The Americans cruised to a first-set win, 21-14, in just 16 minutes. Everything looked like it would be smooth sailing, but the Czechs began to show why they could easily be the future of women's beach volleyball.

Slukova and Kolocova, both 24, showcased tremendous speed and agility, getting to balls that plenty of top players would have had more trouble with. At one point, they had the Americans on the ropes with an 18-17 lead in the second set.

But the veterans—as they always do—prevailed with a mini-run to take the second set, 21-19, over the 10th-ranked team in the world.

This pair of 30-something-year-olds isn't going anywhere. People keep expecting them to drop off at some point, but until they actually lose a set (let alone an entire match in Olympic competition), I'm willing to tag them as the favorites to take home their third straight gold.

The quest for that gold medal—and, for all we know, world domination—continues on Wednesday against the 13th-ranked Schwaiger sisters from Austria to round out group play.

A win, and May-Treanor and Walsh are into the quarterfinals. A loss, and...oh wait, they have already locked up a spot in the quarters with their most recent straight-set domination.
