Questions for Pittsburgh's Steeler Nation

Nick SignorelliFeb 21, 2009

On these message boards, it seams that Steeler Nation has a lot of disagreements with those fans of other teams. At a family gathering today, there were interesting questions that came up, that I would like your opinion on.

First up, is Mike Tomlin as good a coach as Bill Cowher?

As good as? You have to be kidding me!

Bill Cowher was a good coach.  My biggest problem with Cowher was, our team was so good, so often, he should have won at least three Lombardi's. Had Jeff Fisher been our coach, Tomlin would have put the final ring on the second hand.

Tomlin thrives when the pressure is on. He takes chances (onside kick against Redskins or fake punt against the Chargers in the playoffs). He is a risk taker. Risk equals reward.

Even if they don't always pay off, the team still pulls it off. It shows the team that he has confidence in them, and NOTHING is more valuable than that.

Tomlin has made other teams realize that coaching is not an old mans game.

Then the conversation turned to.....

Can we pull it off again next year?

Let's see. This year the Steelers had the toughest schedule in the NFL. The last time a Super Bowl Champion had this hard of a schedule was 1979, when THAT Steelers team won it all.

This past season we played the NFC East (Eagles and Giants went to the Playoffs), AFC South (Tennessee and Indianapolis went to the playoffs).  The Chargers, Patriots (who at 11-5 should have made the playoffs), the Ravens twice.

That schedule would have killed most teams, and we still had the No. 1 D in the league.

This year we will play the Dolphins instead of the Patriots. The Titans instead of the Colts.  The AFC West, and the NFC North (did they have a playoff team last year?).

I almost forgot, we only have one starter on the D side of the ball that's scheduled to become a free agent.

Can we pull it off? I expect us to!

Then the Cowboy fan (by marriage) chimed in.

Romo is better than Ben.

Say what you want about Big Ben, he wins. A lot. Forget Pro Bowls, forget stats, all I want to know is, does he win?  With Ben it is a resounding YES.

Ben finds a way to do it.  It might not be pretty, but he gets it done.  It's called clutch.  You have it or you don't.

Brady has it, Montana had it.  Ben HAS it.  Romo?  Not so much.

Every team starts off with one goal.  Win the Super Bowl.  Ben has won the Super Bowl in two out of five years.  That's 40%.  Show me anyone that has done that.

Let me know what you think BR friends.

Is Tomlin as good as Cowher?  What are our chances next year?  Will Ben go down in Steelers history as one of the best ever quarterbacks?
