Chelsea Transfer News: Is Ashley Cole on His Way to Old Trafford?

Dan TalintyreJun 1, 2018

In the most sensational rumor of the summer transfer window, Chelsea defender Ashley Cole has been linked with a move to Manchester United as the Red Devils look to bolster their defense for the upcoming English Premier League season.

According to latest reports, the England international is viewed as a potential replacement for Patrice Evra at Old Trafford, should contract negotiations with the Blues continue to stall.

Manchester United have made a check on Ashley Cole's Chelsea future as they maintain their hunt for a new left-back.

Cole is yet to start talks on a new Blues contract, despite the fact that his current deal expires in 12 months. That alerted United, who have so far refused to meet Everton's £15 million asking price for Leighton Baines.

"

Now I understand the summer transfer window provides lots of speculation and possible moves, but this one is one of the most ridiculous rumors all summer—if not the greatest of them all.

Simply put, there is no way that Chelsea will sell Cole to United, and I would also argue that there's no way United actually want Cole at Old Trafford.

Think about it for a minute.

Yes, the Red Devils need to build on their defense and they are looking for further cover at left-back, but if they really want a replacement for Patrice Evra and deem him to be old, why then would they pursue the 31-year-old Cole?

No team—especially not one that boasts the experience and wisdom of Sir Alex Ferguson—is going to acquire a 31-year-old for a player deemed to be old, especially when the player in question isn't that much better than the player he would be replacing.

And even if United did want Cole, there's simply no way in the world that Chelsea would let him leave over the summer transfer window bound for Old Trafford.

United will no doubt be one the Blues' biggest rivals to winning the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League this season, and selling Cole to them may very well hinder their chances at success. That simply isn't going to happen under the watch of Roberto Di Matteo.

Cesar Azpilicueta could well be on his way to Stamford Bridge—that's a story worth following (per Goal) over the upcoming few days and seeing whether or not anything comes of it.

But Ashley Cole to Manchester United? Give us a break.

Next you're going to be telling us that Andy Carroll's worth £35 million.

Oh, wait.

Ashley Cole isn't making a move to Manchester United, is he?
