Manchester City Transfer News: City Cannot Win Title with Current Squad

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has delivered a scathing blow on the club's current dealings over the summer transfer window, stating they have no chance of winning the UEFA Champions League title with his current squad.

Touted as the favorites for the upcoming English Premier League season, the Citizens have not added a single player to their squad this summer—much to the ire of Mancini, who blasted the club in his latest comments via The Daily Mirror.

"Defending the [English Premier League] title should be our target this year.

"We will try to win it [the UEFA Champions League] but it's important, for this, that we have a good squad. But I don't think we can play for the Champions League with this squad. That is my opinion, so for this reason we have to buy..."

Mancini also went on to lament the manner in which the club has failed to actively pursue Arsenal striker Robin van Persie as their top transfer target this summer.

"I don't think [the problem] is that the club doesn't want to spend—it's not easy when Manchester City try to buy a player.

"The club we are buying from asks for 30 or 40 percent more. This is not correct. Okay, you may have to pay £1m more for a player you want, but not £10m plus. For this reason it’s sometimes difficult to do business. When I work, I try to work well, and it’s the same for the other jobs.

"We need to work well [in the transfer market] and we need to work better sometimes. The market has another three weeks and I hope we can do something. It’s important for us [to strengthen] because we’re not a team who has won the title for the last 15 years..."

The Citizens' manager wrapped up his comments with a statement of intent to sign at least three or four players throughout the remainder of the summer transfer window.

“Our mentality is very strong, like the other teams, but if you don’t change a lot of players you can’t hope to win [more trophies] like other teams.

“We need to work even harder now because we have won the title. We need players with the right mentality, like the ones we have signed in the last year.

“We don’t need 10 players, like we did maybe three or four years ago. But we need three or four players, players who can improve our team.

It’s important because it’s not easy to win a championship in England. It’s more difficult than in Italy, but after winning it’s more difficult to stay at the top for a long time.

For this reason we need to improve. We need to improve by buying players. We can’t think that we won the last Championship and arrived at the top so now we deserve to stay there..."

Thus, with the latest comments from Mancini out in the open, we can definitely expect a reinvigorated Manchester City throughout the summer transfer window as they try to sign the players needed to boost their squad.

Van Persie is an obvious suggestion to chase for but players such as Ezequiel Lavezzi and Edinson Cavani may also start to receive attention from the Citizens once more.
