Olympic Swimming Schedule 2012: USA's Best Hopes for Gold in Remaining Events

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

The U.S. Olympic swimming team has plenty of opportunities left to bring home some more gold at the 2012 Games.

In fact, when it's all said and done, they may need to book a separate flight to bring back all these medals.

Here are three events in which the U.S. are near-locks to win the gold.

Missy Franklin: 200-meter Backstroke, Finals on Friday, August 3

For Missy "The Missile" Franklin, the only question worth asking is what distance she will win by.

Franklin has turned in the fastest time in the world in the event this year by almost half-a-second.

She is just starting to come into her own, and that will be more apparent than ever in this event.

Michael Phelps: 200-meter Butterfly, Finals on Tuesday, July 31

Michael Phelps has been so dominant in everything he's done in the pool that it is easy to forget that he, like everyone else, has a "best" event.

That event is the butterfly.

Even if Phelps flops and fizzles in every event leading up to this one, the gold in this event is still as good as his.

Women's 4x100-meter Medley, Finals on Saturday, August 4

The Americans have an excellent chance to grab gold in every relay, but this is their biggest shot. To get a feel for their dominance, just understand that their qualifying time is over three full seconds ahead of China, who had the second best time.

Missy Franklin is again at the heart of what should be another gold medal for the U.S., but this squad is about far more than just her. With Franklin, Natalie Coughlin and Dana Vollmer all ready to hit the pool, there is no way these ladies lose.
