China is blowing countries away in gold medals. They have won six, three more than any country.

Swimming and shooting have been the primary sports for China so far in terms of gold medals. They have won two a piece in those events.

Eight of their 12 medals have come in those two events.

China is setting the pace early in the Olympics, making a statement as a country.

United States (11)

Eight of the United States' 11 medals have come in swimming. They have dominated the competition from start to finish. Two gold medals came from swimming, including Ryan Lochte's performance Friday and Dana Vollmer's world record butterfly performance Sunday.

Keeping pace with China seems like a difficult challenge given their consistency, but so far, swimming is keeping them on the doorstep.

Italy (7)

Fencing has been the Italians best event so far as four medals including one gold were earned. Archery, shooting and fencing have also brought medals to the Italians thus far.

After holding a slight advantage over the Americans after Day 1, the Italians are three back on the medal count.

Korea (5)

Archery and shooting have provided Korea three-of-five medals for Korea. Two of those medals were gold-medal efforts.

China and United States seem to be separating themselves from the pack, but Korea will look to other events in the coming days to get them back in the hunt.

Japan (5)

Japan has failed to win a gold medal, but they have collected five total to this point. Judo has been the event for Japan as two medals were produced.

As the competition continues, expect Japan to push towards the top of the medal standings.

France (4)

France has been the latest country to push into the top five in medal count. Swimming has been France's best event, winning two gold medals, including stunning the United States, taking a gold away from them in the 4x100 freestyle.

Shooting and judo are two other events the French have won at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
