Barcelona Transfer Rumors: Neymar Addition Would Secure La Liga Title

Rob GoldbergJul 29, 2012

Barcelona finished in a disappointing second place last year in La Liga, but the team might have the key to catching Real Madrid to be back on top this season.

Livio Caferoglu of Goal.com reports that the club could acquire Brazilian scorer Neymar as quickly as after the Olympics.

Team Vice President Josep Maria Bartomeu explained, "We would all like Neymar to come after the Olympics. He is a Santos player [at the moment] but I am sure Neymar will come to Europe in the future, and when that moment arrives we will be attentive so he can sign for Barcelona."

This would be incredible news for a team that needs another striker to compliment Lionel Messi up front.

It had already been reported by Cadena SER radio (via sport360.com) that Barcelona had paid some of the transfer fee for the 20-year-old to join the team after the 2014 World Cup. However, the change in schedule will help the Catalans even sooner.

Last season, Barcelona allowed the fewest goals in the entire Spanish Premier League. They even added Jordi Alba this summer to secure an already solid defense. Still, there is still plenty to add on the offensive side of the ball.

Messi provided the team with plenty of scoring, but there were few additional threats to opposing teams. Alexis Sanchez finished second on the team with 12 goals, 38 behind Messi for the team lead.

Neymar will provide instant offense as he has proven throughout his short career that he knows how to get the ball in the back of the net. He has performed very well with Santos, and now he is showing what he can do at the International level at the Olympics for Brazil.

With a midfield full of great passers, Neymar will easily get additional opportunities and should thrive after moving to Europe.

The competition between Barcelona and Real Madrid is always fierce, but Barca might have gotten a leg up on its rival for the upcoming season.
