Olympic Results 2012: Abigail Johnston & Kelci Bryant Win Diving Silver Medal

Synchronized diving is an event that has been a struggle for the United States to grab a foothold in, but the team's shining moment in all it's history of the event came when Abigail Johnston and Kelci Bryant took silver in the thee-meter event in London.

Johnston and Bryant while never earning Olympic medals until now, are no strangers to the medal podium in their chosen sport. They took home three at the most recent Diving World Series event and finished fourth at the World Cup back in February.

In an interview with Jim Souhan of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Bryant discussed how she owes much of her success to her coach, Wenbo Chen.

Even before he took a college job, he encouraged me to experience college and compete for NCAA championships... I've learned how to compete for a team and not just as an individual, and I had never had that before. I wouldn't change a thing.

"

The silver medal victory is a redemptive one of sorts for Bryant, who was able to follow up her 2008 fourth place finish in Beijing with this performance in London.

Johnston earned her first ever Olympic medal, and from the looks of this tweet from Doug Lesmerises of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, she's feeling just as happy as her partner must right now:

The Olympics is always full of surprising events, dominant performances and underdog stories, with this marking one of the first of the latter to occur early on in London.

Not only have both women marked their place in the history of the 2012 Summer Olympics, but ending their country's drought in this competition cements them in American Olympic synchronized diving history.
