United States gymnast Jordyn Wieber surprisingly did not qualify for the women's individual all-around final on Sunday, according to NBC Sports.

Wieber was expected to easily qualify for the final since she won the gold medal in the individual all-around at the 2011 World Championships in Tokyo and was seen by many as the favorite for the gold going into the Olympics.

Olympic rules limit each country to just two participants in the final, and since Wieber's American teammates Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas scored better in their routines, they will represent the United States in the final.

Many people involved in gymnastics don't like this rule because it creates scenarios in which top contenders for the gold medal, like Wieber, don't have an opportunity to accomplish their lifelong goal because their country can only have two athletes in the final.

It will be interesting to watch how this disappointing result in an event that Wieber should have competed for the gold medal in will affect her mentally. This American team is a close group and will certainly give Wieber all the support she needs.

She still has other opportunities to win medals and needs to focus on those events and put this failure behind her as quickly as possible.
