Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch Will Lead the Nationwide Series To The Green
It looked, for a brief moment in time during the qualifying session for the Nationwide series at Fontana, like the front row would be the Mike and Mike show.
Rookie Michael McDowell, best known for his spectacular barrel roll wreck, had a fast time in his No. 47 Toyota.
Right beside him was Mike Bliss, who had been fastest in Nationwide practice. Bliss has had great success in the USAC series and is now driving in both the Camping World Truck and the Nationwide series.
But the Mike and Mike front row show was not meant to be. Cup Series regular Carl Edwards secured the pole in his Scotts Ford, with a lap speed of 179.697 miles per hour.
Right behind Edwards, with a lap speed of 178.860 was Kyle "Rowdy" Busch. For the Nationwide series, Kyle set the pace in his number 18 Z-LineDesigns/Frys.com Toyota.
Other Cup regulars rounded out the top 10 in Nationwide qualifying. Greg Biffle secured fifth position and Jeff Burton will take the green in the sixth spot.
"Sliced Bread" Logano will start in seventh place, with David Ragan in eighth. "Happy" Harvick and Michael Waltrip secured the final spots in the top 10.
Stuntman Stanton Barrett was the final qualifier to make the race. Four drivers failed to qualify, including Scott Wimmer, John Borneman III, Mark Harmon, and Andy Ponstein.
The most interesting part of qualifying was when the session had to be halted. The red flag came out not for a wreck, but for debris of an animal nature.
A grey fox had managed to find his way out into the middle of the race track. After running around for a brief time, the fox was eventually scared off the track and through a hole in the fence by one of the track driers.
Joey Logano said he "thought it was a cat." He shared that it was "pretty funny" and was certainly not something that you saw every day at the race track.
With the field set, and the fox off the track, the Nationwide race is set to run on Saturday evening under the lights of the Auto Club Speedway.
