Arsenal Transfer News: Arsene Wenger Slams Robin Van Persie Speculation

Dan TalintyreJun 7, 2018

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has slammed the current speculation regarding captain and star striker Robin van Persie and his possible move away from the Emirates this summer.

Speculation on where the Dutch international would end up at the end of the summer transfer window has been sky-high since the striker indicated he would not resign with the club at the end of this season when his contract expires.

After Arsenal's preseason defeat to Manchester City, Wenger lost his cool when the topic of Van Persie came up in the press conference according to The Daily Mirrorโ€”stating that:

"

We have talked about [Robin] van Persie. We have just played a gameโ€”there are four English people here and there have been four questions about him.

I have talked about Van Persie and I'm not talking about that question anymoreโ€”do you understand? [He] is close to fitness, but we have not had any more contact from City or United about him...

"

Wenger's position on the entire saga is completely understandable given the incredible masses of speculation and rumors that have taken place over the transfer window. If you don't believe me, check out The Idiot's Guide to the Robin van Persie Sagaย and you'll understand that there has been so much taken place already this summerโ€”most of which is just rumors and speculation.

The manager also denied claims that the club were interested in signing Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin, who had been linked with move to the Emirates should Robin van Persie leave the club, according to the club's website (h/t Goal):

"

We did not sign anybody today, this report is wrong. We are not signing anybody at the momentโ€”we are not close. In the future, you never know.

For us at the moment, it is to prepare the [English Premier League] seasonโ€”it is more than any individual player...

"

Thus with Sahin not making a move and the Gunners standing firm for the most part on Robin van Persie, all the speculation and rumor about a potential move by the Dutch international could be for nothing.

There is a distinct possibility that the Arsenal striker will indeed, remain an Arsenal striker for the upcoming English Premier League season as no offers come forward from Manchester City, Manchester United or Juventus.

The club has stood firm throughout the saga that they expected Van Persie to see out his contract at the clubโ€”meaning that he would remain at the Emirates this year. Which, for the Gunners anyway, is the best possible scenario available.

Not only do they get their star striker for another season, they also get another 10 or so months to try and convince him to remain at Arsenal and sign a contract extension.

Should that happen, then all of the speculation and rumors would have truly been for nothing.

Will Robin van Persie stay at Arsenal this summer or will he make a move?
