New York Mets: I Believe in Harvey Dent...Um, I Mean Matt Harvey

Christopher BenvieMay 31, 2018

In the film The Dark Knight, Harvey Dent is built up as the savior of Gotham—the face of change and hope for the city.

In New York, another Harvey has taken that spotlight: Matt Harvey.

The New York Mets' second-ranked prospect in their system made his major league debut on Thursday night and made it in a big way.

Not only did he single-handedly slam the brakes on the Mets' losing streak since the All-Star break (they are just 2-8 in their last 10 games) by striking out 11 batters, he set a franchise record for a pitching debut.

His fastball hit 97 MPH during his 5.1-inning outing, he threw 106 pitches and allowed just three hits while giving up three walks against 23 batters faced.

For those keeping score at home, that means his ERA is 0.00 with a 1.125 WHIP and an eye-popping 18.6 K/9 ratio.

Sure, these statistics are meaningless after just one game, but Harvey gave Mets fans hope in the team once again.

While the Mets are 11.5 games out of the division race, they are just 6.5 games behind in the wild-card race with 63 games to go. A boost like this in the starting rotation might just prove to be the catalyst the team needs to go 40-23 the rest of the way.

As Kevin Garnett told us, anything is possible, and as Alfred Pennyworth (Batman movies) said, "Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves up."

It's time for the Mets to do just that.
