2012 Women's Gymnastic Olympic Team: Stars You Can't Miss in Action

Scott CarasikJun 7, 2018

Women's gymnastics is the epitome of must-see events in the Summer Olympics.

This year, the US women's gymnastics team is the best it has been in a long time. In fact, this team has the ability to be considered the best ever if it lives up to the potential that it has.

When it comes to women to watch, the team has more than enough. Should they stay healthy, this could also be the highest-rated group.

These women will prove why gymnastics are such pivotal events at the Olympic Games.

Jordyn Wieber

1 of 5

Events: All-Around, Floor, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam

Age: 17

Jordyn Wieber is amazing. She is the best gymnast on the entire team, and one of the few women in the world who could legitimately earn a medal in all five gymnastics events. She will also be an anchor in the team competition.

Her biggest asset is the strength she possesses and the fluidity she has. Combine those attributes with her versatility to take on any event, and you can expect to see a lot of the 17-year-old from DeWitt, Michigan over the next few weeks.

Gabby Douglas

2 of 5

Events: All-Around, Uneven Bars

Age: 16

Gabby Douglas is an amazing talent as an all-around gymnast. Her artistry can earn her bonus points even if she isn't the most perfect technical gymnast on some days. Gabby is going to compete for gold in the all-around and the uneven bars.

She might just be the best gymnast in the entire competition. It can be amazing to watch her float on the uneven bars like a butterfly and fly off the vault.

It will be hard to miss Douglas in the coming weeks.

Aly Raisman

3 of 5

Events: All-Around, Floor, Balance Beam

Age: 18

Raisman is a great gymnast and the third best on the team. She can compete in every single event for a gold, but her speciality is on the balance beam and the floor. She is the best the country has for those events.

She's also the oldest on the entire team and has been voted the team captain. It's a spot that is very underrated in a sport that is based around individual achievements. However, Raisman should be able to mellow out her teammates in the stressful competition.

McKayla Maroney

4 of 5

Events: Vault

Age: 16

McKayla Maroney is the rare specialist on the team. She is the best vaulter in the world, and her start values are always amazing. There are questions as to whether she will be able to win the vault due to her broken toe, but she is going to compete anyway.

If she can pull off her Mustafina and Amanar in the London competition, there is no reason for her to not duplicate her gold medal performance in the 2011 World Championships. However, she has to be healthy to win the gold.

Kyla Ross

5 of 5

Events: Uneven Bars, Balance Beam

Age: 15

Did we just list the entire team?

Of course we did.

The US women's gymnastics team is excellent, and Kyla Ross is no exception. Her routines on the balance beam and the uneven bars are exceptional. They are why she made the team.

Kyla is both a medal hopeful and an asset for the team all-around. She also could be a complete dark horse for the all-around gold if she can get her floor routine and her vault to the same level as her other routines.

She is still exciting to watch, either way, and another one of the reasons to watch the US women's gymnastics team.
