London Olympics 2012: Top 5 Storylines to Follow on Day 10

Jesse ReedJun 5, 2018

The 2012 Summer Games in London are more than halfway over now as we press into Day 10. The landscape for bigger team sports like women's soccer and men's basketball are starting to take shape, and it'll be time to start handing out medals soon.

The U.S. women's soccer team is preparing to face Canada in the semifinals, the U.S. men's basketball team is preparing to win another game—this time against Argentina—and individual competitions in gymnastics are all on the docket for Monday, August 6.

Let's take a look at those and the other top storylines for Day 10 of the Summer Games.

Will the American Women Continue Their Winning Ways?

1 of 5

Sport: Soccer

Event: Women's Semifinal

Time: 2:45 p.m. ET

Team USA have been dominant ever since their opening-match wake-up call, when they went down 2-0 against France. Since then, the American women haven't given up a single goal, while pouring in 10 of their own.

Canada, on the other hand, is lucky to be here. They went 1-1-1 in their group, barely making it into the bracket. However, they made the most of their opportunity once they got in, defeating Great Britain by a score of 2-0.

The Americans are on a roll, though, and Canada will be hard-pressed to defeat them. It should be an exciting match, regardless of which team comes away victorious.

Can Team USA Dominate Argentina?

2 of 5

Sport: Men's Basketball

Event: USA vs. Argentina

Time: 5:15 p.m. ET

Team USA did just enough to come away with a six-point victory over Argentina in their exhibition leading up to the Summer Games.

They'd been cruising along in these Olympic Games until they met Lithuania in their last game. The Americans scraped by with a win, beating Lithuania 99-94, but the outcome wasn't a sure thing until the final buzzer.

Argentina was upset by France in their second game of group play, but they've won big twice since then over Tunisia and Nigeria.

Still, this should be Team USA's game from the get-go, and I fully expect them to bounce back from a sub-par performance in their last game against Lithuania.

How Will the American Women Fare on the Uneven Bars?

3 of 5

Sport: Gymnastics - Artistic

Event: Women's Uneven Bars

Time: 9:50 a.m. ET

Gabby Douglas is the only American gymnast competing in this final. Though she's know as the "Flying Squirrel" due to the insane height she gets in her routine, she's going to have a tough time beating the likes of Russia's Viktoria Komova, China's Huang Qiushuang and Great Britain's Beth Tweddle.

The best performer during qualifications was Tweddle, who posted an astounding 16.133—easily the top score, as no other gymnast cracked the 16-point barrier.

Will Samuel Mikulak Shock the World?

4 of 5

Sport: Gymnastics - Artistic

Event: Men's Vault

Time: 10:41 a.m. ET

Samuel Mikulak could shock the world by medaling in the men's vault.

He registered the fourth-highest score during qualifications, bumping Jake Dalton, who had a sub-par vault, from competing in this event.

He has a tall task in front of him, though, if he hopes to earn a medal of any color. Russia's Denis Ablyazin and South Korea's Yang Hak Seon were both stellar, as well as Chile's Enrique Tomas Gonzalez Sepulveda.

The Battle Between Jenn Suhr and Yelena Isinbayeva

5 of 5

Sport: Athletics

Event: Women's Pole Vault

Time: 2:00 p.m. ET

American track and field star Jenn Suhr has won 11 gold medals between the U.S. Indoor and Outdoor Championships. She won gold at the last two Olympic trials, too.

One thing she hasn't been able to do thus far is defeat her Russian rival, Yelena Isinbayeva, who won the gold medal in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. Isinbayeva is equally as decorated, if not more so, than Suhr on the world stage.

Both women will push themselves and one another to the limit on Day 10 of these Olympic Games, and it'll be exciting to see which one comes out on top in 2012.
