Opening Ceremony 2012: Famous Names Who Will Appear in Danny Boyle's Event

Ian HanfordJul 27, 2012

Danny Boyle's opening ceremony centers around an "Isles of Wonder" theme. We don't know exactly what all that includes, but you can expect unparallelled quality from the director that brought us "Slumdog Millionaire."

Boyle's creative vision will be supplemented by a handful of famous faces. Their exact roles are yet to be determined, but we can expect a few unique sections of the ceremony.

Let's check out who you should be looking out for in Friday's opening ceremony.

David Beckham

Beckham was left off of Great Britain's football squad, but Boyle didn't want to leave Becks out entirely. Instead he surprised Beckham with a role in the opening ceremony, something that surprised him according to his interview with ABC's "Nightline."

Boyle certainly added star power by bringing Beckham into the fold for the opening festivities. He was left out of the event he really wanted to participate in, but his presence will still command some attention.

We don't know what Beckham will be doing, and he wouldn't reveal it in his interview with ABC, but, whatever it is, it will be anticipated by everyone watching at home.

Sir Paul McCartney

McCartney is going to sing a "closing song" according to FOX Sports (via The Associated Press). There's nothing more fitting than this.

McCartney is one of the most prominent British names ever. His musical career with The Beatles is more than documented, and his solo career continues to this day. Boyle's decision to bring someone "old school" and classy into the mix was a wise one.

You can bet McCartney prepared something special for this grand occasion. Millions upon millions of eyes will be watching, and he's delivered countless performances in his music career.

Daniel Craig

This one comes from the same FOX Sports report that mentions McCartney, but it isn't as straight forward.

"

Many reports are also suggesting a pre-recorded segment filmed inside Buckingham Palace featuring actor Daniel Craig as Bond, and a stuntman dressed as 007 who will parachute into the stadium to start the show.

"

I had to include this because it says "stuntman." How cool is that? It doesn't sound like Craig will technically be there, but this will be just as effective.

James Bond is one of the most famous British characters of all time. Paying homage to that by including it in the ceremony, and showing people a real-life stunt, is an excellent twist to Boyle's event.

It will create some excitement and possibly the unexpected.
