Olympic Soccer 2012: US Women Will Build on Comeback Win by Destroying Colombia

Jun 2, 2018

Even though the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics isn't until Friday evening, the soccer competition has already begun.

Although the United States Women's National Team needed to rally to win their first match of the Games, Abby Wambach and Co. should find the sledding much easier when the Americans next take to the pitch.

The United States fell into an early 2-0 hole against France on Wednesday before going on the offensive. As Sam Borden of The New York Times reported, the American side were able to keep their cool:

While France tried to push its advantage, the United States quickly rebounded. Alex Morgan said she and Abby Wambach told each other, “All right, a goal each” and they delivered, with Wambach heading in a goal from a Megan Rapinoe corner kick and Morgan running onto a long punt from Solo before burying a short-range shot to tie the score at 2-2 just after the half-hour mark.

"

Carli Lloyd then scored on a 25-yard shot to put the U.S. ahead for good in the 56th minute. After Alex Morgan tacked on some insurance with her second goal of the match, the two-time defending Olympic champions were off and running in London (well, Glasgow, actually) with a 4-2 win.

Next up for Team USA is a Saturday tilt with Colombia. Unless the entire American team eats a bad batch of haggis before the match, the United States should overpower a hapless Colombian side with relative ease.

The lone highlight of the Colombians' first match against North Korea was the fact that the start of the match was delayed for almost an hour.

As Frank Isola of the New York Daily News reports, the South Korean flag was mistakenly displayed on the scoreboard at Hampden Park, causing much consternation among officials from the PRK.

After the error was corrected, the Colombians were unfortunately left no recourse but to actually play soccer, and the match ended in a 2-0 victory for the North Koreans.

With all due respect to the Colombian side, if they got shut out by North Korea, they're going to be absolutely annihilated by the United States.

The American women will follow up their match with Colombia with a match next Tuesday against the North Koreans at Old Trafford in Manchester. That should set Team USA up quite nicely to emerge from Group G with a perfect 3-0 mark heading into the knockout stages.

At that point, the stakes will get higher, the competition more challenging. Until then, enjoy those cupcakes, ladies.

After the comeback against France, you've earned them.
