Derrick Green Could Be the Next Great Running Back to Land with Michigan

Colan LamontJun 6, 2018

Derrick Green is a monster running back and a named a five-star recruit by a number of recruiting services.

Green has a combination of 4.3 speed, great size at 215 lbs, and the sort of physical prowess that would have most NFL teams salivating.

What might shock people is that Green is a former offensive lineman.

In fact, the running back had to shed over 50 lbs just to ensure that potential recruiters didn't view him as a defensive tackle.

Dave Hocker of espn.go.com reports that the weight loss acted as a transformation in the lifestyle of Green and that the same dedication has turned him into a dominant running back who can squat 600 lbs.

Green admits himself that he is a downhill runner who you are unlikely to see dancing around the line of scrimmage: that sounds like a recipe for success in the Big Ten if you ask me.

Michigan doesn't really have that power back that will run over defenders and so I feel it is vital to add someone who can complement the incoming revolution that will arrive at Michigan very soon.

I know the defensive recruits and offensive line recruits for 2013 are among the very best but wouldn't it be nice to develop a great trio who can excel in the offensive skill positions?

The three players I'm referring to are of course Shane Morris, Derrick Green and LaQuon Treadwell.

Whilst Michigan appears to be leading the chase for the services of Treadwell, they haven't yet established their position in the running for Green.

Clemson is the supposed leader for Green but I don't think anything is set in stone.

Michigan would allow him to be the power back he desires to be whereas I'm not sure he would fit in with a team that prefers smaller, shiftier backs as shown by stars like C.J Spiller, Andre Ellington and D.J Howard.

Plus I imagine he must be loving all of the offensive lineman that Michigan has added, I really think that is a huge selling point for the Wolverines.

Another not-so-secret weapon in the recruitment of Green could be quarterback and recruiter extraordinaire Shane Morris.

Morris has spoken to Green, and with Ohio State turning its back on Green, Michigan could finally be ready to flex its muscles.

Green has reiterated that he is looking forward to the Michigan barbecue and it will be interesting to see just how impressed he is when he gets his first opportunity to pick Brady Hoke's brain.

I understand that there is only one place left on the team for another 2013 recruit and that Treadwell is the favourite but Michigan would find a way to add Green if he is willing to make a decision early enough.
