USA vs. France Score: Dominant Outing Cements American's Spot as Gold Favorites
In their 2012 Olympics opener, the U.S. women's soccer team took down France 4-2, and they were even more dominant than the two-goal margin suggests.
The Americans rolled into the London Games as the two-time defending Olympics gold medal winners. According to OddsPortal.com, they are comfortable favorites to make that a three-peat, and judging by their performance in the opener, they will do just that.
This was a big opening test for the U.S.
OddsPortal.com has France with the fifth lowest odds to win the gold. They are a talented squad, but the U.S. made them look completely pedestrian.
The U.S. quickly fell behind 2-0 in this match before launching an unprecedented Olympics comeback. The USA Today pointed out that they were the first women's soccer team to ever come back from a 2-0 deficit to claim a victory, and they did so relatively easily.
Alex Morgan netted the equalizer by just the 31st minute, and it was all U.S.A from there.
Morgan ended up netting two goals to continue her emergence as the best weapon on the team and one of the world's premier players. Her goal-scoring is a huge boost to this team. The U.S. had three matches in last year's World Cup, where they managed just one goal by the end of regulation. With the added firepower, this team is going to be unstoppable.
As for the two early goals they allowed? They were uncharacteristic from this tough defensive squad, and it is something that can be written off as a fluke.
Star goaltender Hope Solo allowed the two goals, but there were some extenuating circumstances. I'll let The USA Today's Robert Klemko explain:
"Coach Pia says the sun may have been in Hope's eyes during first two goals. Hope Solo says she won't use that as an excuse.

While Solo isn't going to use that as an excuse, it does point to the fact that those two early scores were more an exception than a reality we can expect. This team will be just fine defensively, and with Morgan solidifying the offense, they will not be stopped.
