Florida Recruiting: 4-Star DT Pursuing Other Visits Should Caution Gators

Jake MartinJul 25, 2012

Though he's committed to Florida, 4-star defensive tackle Caleb Brantley is insistent on visiting Auburn and Georgia.

Brantley is one of Will Muschamp's gems in his 2013 recruiting class. ESPN, 247 Sports and Rivals all have Brantley listed as a 4-star defensive tackle, and he's No. 31 on ESPN's 150.

Those are all things to get excited about if you're a Florida Gator fan, but what should warrant cause for concern is him visiting two rival SEC schools.

In an interview with Auburn Sports' Justin Hokanson this week, Brantley remained consistent about wanting to visit those two schools.

"They are still a school I definitely want to check out, I just don't have the resources right now to make a visit," Brantley said. "But I want to check them out."

Brantley further added that he's "still a Gator," but he's keeping his options open.

Another troubling dimension in this story for Gator fans is that Brantley is forming relationships with Auburn recruits Rueben Foster and Carl Lawson.

You remember what happened when Foster was interested in two schools named Georgia and Auburn, don't you? Of course you do. Foster switching from Alabama to Auburn was the talk of the South, and Brantley sensed it was coming.

"I talked to Carl at The Opening and I talked to Reuben before he switched. They came at me with all the Auburn talk, just telling me to go check them out. I knew Reuben was going to flip after that weekend," Brantley said.

Could the same happen for Florida's Brantley? Perhaps Brantley might make a similar switch in the future.

A visit is just a visit, and while he remains a Gator, Gator fans should still be weary about him visiting his buddies Foster and Lawson at Auburn. Though Brantley has given a solid verbal to Florida, it seems as though he's not ready to end his recruitment.

Brantley may want to play the field.
