San Francisco Marathon: Route, Date and Start Time Info

Thousands of runners will take off on a 26.2 mile journey on Sunday in California, when the annual San Francisco Marathon begins.

The event was first held in 1977, and has been won by Andrew Cook of the United States three times. American Janis Klecker has the most wins of any woman, with two all-time.

Many participants will be looking to set a personal best, while some athletes will hope to qualify for the Boston Marathon with a strong performance in the Bay Area this summer.

Where: San Francisco, California

Start Time: 5:30 - 6:45 a.m. PT

The Route

The course is essentially a loop that will take runners on a wild adventure through the streets of San Francisco. Participants will start and finish on the Embarcadero, according to the event's official website. Then the runners will pace themselves through the city, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge twice and running through Golden Gate Park.

Near the end of the course, participants will pass the San Francisco Giants' ballpark, AT&T Park, before running under the Bay Bridge and across the line to punch in their time.

Weather Conditions

The temperature at the start of the race will likely be in the upper 50s according to the marathon's official website. Eventually the city and course will heat up as the morning turns to afternoon.

The high is expected to be around 61 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday, with some morning clouds giving way to afternoon sunshine. As of now, the weather is looking excellent for Sunday's San Francisco Marathon.
