Why the Hanley Ramirez Trade Is Perfect for the Los Angeles Dodgers

Zak SchmollJun 6, 2018

Shortstop Hanley Ramirez has been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers with relief pitcher Randy Choate in return for young starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi and a minor leaguer, according to Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports.

This was really the perfect trade for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Everyone knows that Ramirez can be a pain to manage, but when he is playing at his best, he can easily be one of the best shortstops in all of baseball.

So far this season, he is only hitting .246 with 14 home runs, 47 RBI and 14 stolen bases. That batting average is definitely too low, but whenever you have a shortstop who is probably going to go 20-20, it is somewhat rare.

Another reason that this was an excellent trade was because the Dodgers had experienced difficulty at shortstop. Dee Gordon hadn't exactly been hitting the cover off the ball, but when he went down with an injury in early July, it became obvious that the Dodgers needed to improve at shortstop.

Ramirez is a former All-Star, and he should be able to fill the hole.

Also, Nathan Eovaldi is a solid young pitcher, but if the Dodgers are able to beat the Atlanta Braves and pull off a trade for Ryan Dempster, they obviously have Eovaldi's replacement all lined up.

Nothing is finalized in that trade whatsoever, but many sources are discussing the Dodgers and Cubs talking.

Ramirez has the potential to be one of the best players in baseball, and if he is able to harness that talent, the Dodgers will have gotten a major steal.
