The (Friday) Morning Tailgate

Friday morning.

As was the case last week, we hand ceremonial tailgate bratwurst to our wonderful JoeSportsFan Show guests this week…and in turn, give self-indulgent promotion for our podcast, which you can subscribe to through iTunes.

Emmett Ashford becomes the first certified African-American umpire in organized baseball. 10-year-old Jesse Jackson immediately launches his career thereafter by accusing fans of racism for telling Ashford he needs glasses.

Ricky Steamboat defeats Ric Flair for the NWA title at the Chi-Town Rumble in what some consider the greatest match between the two. If it had a football equivalent, Ron Jaworski would still be studying the footage in his dungeon.

Back in the day, we had only one word for the stylish yet functional sunglass accessory that athletes, preppies, and people in the Steve Garvey Celebrity Billfish Tournament sported on a regular occasion—Croakies.

Now in 2009, the monopoly once enjoyed by Croakies seems to be under seige by the newest product aimed at those out there whose Oakley’s are at risk of tumbling off at any moment. They’re called Captails and they’re coming for you, Croakies.

One of which being the insane amount of money for on-field successes. In the case of Panthers left tackle Jordan Gross, it’s a six-year deal worth a reported $30 million in just the first three seasons. Being a notable Pro Bowl tackle also has a few negatives. For starters, it can lead to confusion for readers of Foxsports.com.

According to our top headline, LaDainian Tomlinson will be playing for the Carolina Panthers in 2009—he got paid big $. Another negative for being a hefty offensive lineman is the ridiculous looking pictures of you.

Okay, so it’s not the pictures per se that look ridiculous but the man appearing in them. For $30 million over three years, though, I’d take it.
