Georgia Football: Breaking Down LB Jarvis Jones' Strengths and Weaknesses

Brian JonesJun 2, 2018

What else needs to be said about Jarvis Jones that hasn't been said already?

Everyone knows how much of a force he was last season, and nearly everyone is picking him as one the best, if not the best linebacker in the country.

And if the Bulldogs do reach the SEC title game once again, he will be the reason they get there.

But as good as Jones has been for Athens, he does have some weaknesses that need to be addressed. It's not anything huge, but it's some aspects of his game that he needs to improve in order to be the absolute best player in the game.

Here's a breakdown of Jones' strengths and weaknesses for the upcoming season.

Strengths

1 of 5

Last season, Jones led the conference in sacks and tackles for loss. The reason for that is he is extremely aggressive at the point of attack and doe not miss tackles.

Jones also has the ability to play sideline-to-sideline, and he proved that by notching over 70 tackles. He not extremely fast, but does have great closing speed. He is also a hard hitter, so when a running back is hit by Jones, they will go down.

Standing at 6'3'' and 240 pounds, Jones has the size, strength and ability to have a success 2012 season as well as a great NFL career.

Weaknesses

The only real thing that may be hurting Jones' game is his pass coverage, but he's good enough to get by.

Jones did not have any interceptions, but his primary goal was to rush the quarterback, and he did that in a huge way last year.

Jones, though, can get hung up on offensive linemen from time-to-time, and his instincts are not always there.

Another thing to watch for is his health. He was very healthy last year, but suffering a neck injury while at USC is no joke. It's been awhile since it happened, but like last year, he has to careful and not lose his aggression.

Improving the Strenghts

The best way for Jones to get better at what he does best is putting in the work that made him the player that he is today.

He is already an aggressive player and is one of the most respected players in the country. But while he has to continue to help the Bulldogs be successful in 2012, he has the think about his future, the NFL in particular.

He already has the tools to become a good NFL player, but in order to be great, Jones has to turn his game up a notch. He has to do extra work in the weight room, spend extra time on the practice field and study more film.

Improve on Weaknesses

4 of 5

The only big aspect of his game that needs improvement is his passing game. So in order for him to improve his game, he has to focus on pass coverage during practice. But Jones did have two passes defended last year, so he's not as bad as one would think.

He has also done a good job staying on the field since his neck injury two years ago. All he needs to do is not miss any practices and keep at it in the weight room.

As for improving his instincts, that takes reps in order to improve. Jones should be better at his linebacker instincts since this will be his third full season of college football.

Final Analysis

5 of 5

As it was said earlier, Jones have all the tools to win a lot of December awards. If everything goes according to plan, Jones should have 80 tackles, 10 sacks and two interceptions.

If he puts up those numbers, he should win the Nagurski Award, along with awards from his teammates.

Based on the numbers he put up last year and having another year under his belt, Jones is the best linebacker in the country. He may have his flaws, but he has the ability to makes his flaws look like his strengths.
