David Beckham...Please Don't Confuse Me

Rohini IyerFeb 20, 2009

To begin with, I came to know about David Beckham through a "Hinglish" movie called "Bend it like Beckham." Its a good, light, and entertaining film about an Indian girl's passion with football and her parents' [especially her mother's] reluctance to allow her to pursue the sport.

But I am not writing this article to give an idea about the movie, I am writing this article to vent my feelings about one Mr. David Beckham on whom I had a crush after watching this two hour saga.

When this film released in 2002, Beckham was playing for Manchester United. At that point of time, I was too naive to understand transfers and loans of the soccer players. So I thought he was going to be a permanent fixture there.

Then a year later, he got himself transferred to Real Madrid for a record fee. I was surprised but then slowly started grasping the nuances of club football [I wasn't an avid follower of the game then] so I ought to get the benefit of the doubt.

Transfer to Real Madrid, however is not the reason Beckham confuses me. After he settled in Madrid and eventually, when I also got accustomed to noting his name for a Spanish team, he made a move to once again shift to the American Soccer team LA Galaxy and before I can adjust to the change, I find him once again in the news for wanting a change in the direction of Italy?

Even though, it's on a loan, I believe that a few days ago he was quoted as saying that he didn't want to leave Milan and Kaka was favouring him to remain in the Italian side.

All this makes me [almost] pull my hair out of the roots in frustration. I seriously can't understand what his criteria for selecting a team is? And he doesn't even remain there for a long period. He has become a nomad; sometimes here and sometimes there.

I mean, he is 33 and by that age a soccer player's career is almost over. Then what's he playing at? His fans' emotions or is he playing "Catch me if you can" sort of a game?

I don't want to poke my long nose into his private affairs but if Beckham is looking for a world tour, I would like to point out that, "hey David....your wife is a Spice Girl; why don't you arrange for a world tour of the Spice Girls and get yourself on the bus with them?" Saves time moving from one continent to the other.

Take a look at Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs or more recently, Kaka. He refused to be sidetracked by Man City's offers. I understand, if Becks want to shift from one club to another but the way he keeps on bouncing like a rubber ball; irritates me somehow.

Like I said, its none of my business to comment on his decisions but I do feel that at some point of time he needs to settle down with a particular club before a club decides that he has run out of his fuel. It wouldn't be something I would want to view in the news.
