Fantasy Football: Who's the Better Week-to-Week QB, Matt Schaub or Matt Ryan?

Jay ClemonsJun 7, 2018

Today's installment of "Choose Your Quarterback" pits Atlanta's Matt Ryan against Houston's Matt Schaubโ€”the No. 9 and No. 11 passers in my rankings of the 32 presumed starting quarterbacks.

Note: That countdown will remain fluid throughout training camp and preseason play.

Here's a week-by-week fantasy breakdown of Schaub vs. Ryanโ€”just in case you're torn onย whichย passer offers better value in Rounds 5-7.

Final Tally

Ryan trumps Schaub, 10-7

Breakdown

We're splitting hairs with the matchups from Weeks 1, 2, 3, 9, 16 and 17, which reiterates just how close Ryan (4,177 yards passing, 31 total TDs last year) and Schaub could be in the August drafts.

From a big-picture standpoint, Ryan has evolved into an annual threat for 4,200 yards passing and 30 touchdowns. But here's why he'll garner a ranking ahead of Schaubโ€”Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers: Of Ryan's three sub-200-yard passing games last year, he accounted for four, two and two TDs, essentially wiping out any weekly cries of mediocrity.

On Mock Draft Central, Schaub currently stands as the No. 17 QB or 123rd overall pick, a ranking unbecoming of a top-10 talent with regular access to a top-five receiver (Andre Johnson) and top-three running back (Arian Foster). Or, maybe I just imagined Schaub's prolific numbers from the 2009 and '10 seasons: 9,140 yards passing, 53 touchdowns and a 66 percent passing mark.

Good/bad news for both quarterbacks: Neither one has a distinct advantage for the fantasy-playoff period of Weeks 13-16.

I love Schaub's capacity for 300-plus passing yards in Week 6 (vs. Green Bay), Week 12 (at Detroit) and Week 16 (vs. Minnesota). Conversely, I foresee Ryan's best days coming against the Broncos (Week 2) and Saints (Weeks 10/13).

One last thing: The Falcons will likely be the only NFL team to have 16 ideal-weather games for the regular season.
