Terrell Suggs Is the Franchise

Jarrett CarterFeb 18, 2009

Ray Lewis may be the heart of the Baltimore Ravens defense, and Bart Scott may be the mouthpiece of the defense, but Terrell Suggs is the whole f’n show for the future of the Ravens defense.

He’s the youngest, most flexible player the Ravens field defensively, and when Ray Lewis does depart the team, he will be the unquestioned leader of the unit.

So why not franchise him now and allow for the Lewis retirement and Bart Scott negotiations to take place?

We’ve longed discussed what Ray Lewis and the Ravens need to do to find a happy place, but the odd man out on contract observations has been Bart Scott. If he knows what’s good for him, he’ll try to find a happy deal that will run out just about the time Lewis retires, which will allow the team to lock down both he and Suggs and the young linebacker that will likely emerge.

Either that, or he can see his career pan out like that of Jamie Sharper and Adalius Thomas. Plenty of money in a place where no one mentions your name anymore.

But back to Suggs, who could easily step into the role as official soundbyte of the field and monster on it upon Lewis’ retirement or signing with another team. He’s been the most vocal member of the linebacker trio since the season ended, publicly making known his desire to finish his career in Charm City.

The Ravens should reward that kind of public loyalty, specifically when their icon hasn’t followed on the same path.
