Thomaz Bellucci Upsets Janko Tipsarevic to Win Swiss Open

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

After dropping the first set, 6-7 (6-8), Thomaz Bellucci rallied in a big way to pull of a three-set, upset victory over Janko Tipsarevic to capture the 2012 Swiss Open title.

Bellucci was dominant in the final two sets, winning 6-4, 6-2, and he now has to officially love this event. Two of his three ATP wins have come in the Swiss Open.

Fox News captured this quote from Bellucci following his big win:

"

Gstaad is very special for me because I won my first title here three years ago, which was a surprise and unexpected. For me to win one more time here is very special. I feel very comfortable here, like I'm playing at home.

"

Bellucci used a dominant serve to help him capture this title. He was not broken over the final two sets. In fact, he lost only six service points over the final set.

Few could have seen this result coming. Tipsarevic entered this match on a roll. Fresh off a win in last week's event in Stuttgart, he entered this tournament as the No. 1 seed. That victory included a semifinal win over Bellucci.

Tipsarevic's eventual win in this match seemed even more inevitable after the first set. Bellucci blew a 6-1 lead in the first set tiebreaker, and it was hard to imagine him recovering from such a serious letdown.

Now, all of a sudden, instead of celebrating his second-straight tournament victory, Tipsarevic is now left to deal with another finals disappointment. He is now just 3-7 all time in tournament finals.

This is a nice win, and his first in two years, for the world's 60th ranked player Bellucci. He will now try to carry this momentum into the Olympics.
