Kenny Britt and 6 Players Receiving Negative Press in Training Camps

Shawn BrubakerJun 3, 2018

Kenny Britt has once again found himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons after his arrest for DUI, but he is hardly the only NFL player receiving negative press as training camp begins.

Whether for their play on the field or their conduct off of it, multiple players have gotten flak for not maintaining the level of quality of play and conduct that NFL teams expect.

Sadly, Britt is just one of many to embarrass his team through off-field misbehavior.

Meanwhile, players like Blaine Gabbert and Danny Amendola are getting press for all the wrong reasons as well, as they are at risk of losing their starting jobs in training camp.

Britt and these five other players are currently generating the most negative press right now.

Aaron Berry

1 of 6

That Aaron Berry has embarrassed both himself and his Detroit Lions is hardly a secret at this point, as his well-publicized second arrest of the offseason indicates.

Berry's June DUI charge was problematic enough, but his most recent arrest for simple assault was enough to get him cut by the usually tolerant Lions.

All in all, Berry has consistently acted like a thug this offseason, and he is an embarrassment to the entire NFL.

His apology statement was well spoken and seemingly heartfelt, and if Berry learns his lesson, he could be one of the great reclamation stories in the NFL.

For now, though, Berry's career very well could be in jeopardy.

He was only a marginal player at this point in his career anyway, so Berry might not be worth the gamble, despite his decent potential.

Berry's transgressions were a dark mark among an otherwise promising offseason for the Lions, but now that they are free of his distractions, they can hopefully move on from the off-field issues that have plagued them lately.

Blaine Gabbert

For Blaine Gabbert, the negative press started the first time he wilted under pressure, and it has continued all the way into training camp.

Few second-year players lose a starting job they acquired the previous season, yet Gabbert might very well be on that path according to an NFL.com report.

Sadly, nobody seems to have anything good to say about the second-year signal caller.

Gabbert's pocket presence, toughness and decision making have all been called into question, and those concerns seem unlikely to go away anytime soon.

Now faced with competition from ousted Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne, Gabbert is expected to wilt the same we he did so many times when faced with pressure last year.

If he does, the boo-birds will be out in flocks, and Gabbert will go down as one of the all-time biggest draft busts.

Dez Bryant

3 of 6

Dez Bryant is hardly a stranger to controversy, but his latest legal troubles may trump all his past transgressions.

According to a Foxsports.com report, Bryant was arrested for physically attacking his mother during a family squabble.

While Bryant's mother has no intention of pursuing criminal charges, she might not have enough sway to help her son avoid legal consequences.

Regardless of what happens to Bryant in court, Roger Goodell may have different plans for the troubled receiver.

Goodell has been known to punish players before the courts have had their say, and this could be another instance in which Goodell preempts the courts.

Whatever happens to Bryant, this is hardly the story that the Dallas Cowboys wanted to hear at this point.

They need a healthy and out-of-trouble Bryant to make it back to the playoffs, and if his off-field antics result in a suspension, Bryant will be on his last chance with the Cowboys.

Danny Amendola

4 of 6

Finding anyone to say something negative about Danny Amendola is nearly impossible, but the St. Louis Rams leading receiver of 2010 could grab a headline for the wrong reason in 2012.

After a season-ending injury in 2011, Amendola is now battling for a roster spot in training camp.

The Rams made upgrading the receiving corps a huge priority this offseason, and to that end they added two draft picks in Brian Quick and Chris Givens and free agent Steve Smith.

All three of these players are locks to make the roster barring injury, and Amendola still has to fight off promising youngsters Danario Alexander, Greg Salas and Austin Pettis.

Meanwhile, Brandon Gibson is still considered the leading receiver.

That means that Amendola will be hard-pressed to make the roster, despite his excellent 2010 season.

While Amendola could still make the team, to go from leading receiver to fighting for a roster spot is hardly the story that Amendola wanted to make for himself.

That training camp battle is as close to negative press as can be found on Danny Amendola.

Justin Blackmon

5 of 6

Troubled Oklahoma State wide receivers seem to be trending lately, and no player better exemplifies this than Jacksonville Jaguars draft pick Justin Blackmon.

Tuesday, Blackmon pleaded guilty to drunk driving, according to an ESPN report.

Blackmon is certainly no stranger to controversy. Many scouts feared that he would be a diva at the NFL level, and he has done nothing to assuage their fears over his character.

The Jaguars took a chance on the talented receiver, as Blackmon will easily be the best receiver on the roster if available.

Unfortunately, a suspension seems imminent for Blackmon, so the Jaguars will most likely be without their best receiver for at least a few games.

Important to note is that this is Blackmon's second alcohol-related offense, as he was also arrested for DUI in 2010.

The Jaguars desperately need Blackmon, but if he continues to be a troublemaker, they will have to find a way to make do without him. This is hardly the news that the struggling Jaguars needed right now.

Kenny Britt

6 of 6

One of the most enigmatic players in the NFL, Kenny Britt can occasionally dazzle with a highlight-reel catch, then come back and embarrass the team with a crucial mental error, either on or off the field.

This time, Britt's off-field conduct is receiving the negative press after his arrest for DUI.

Britt has constantly been in the news for legal troubles, and this latest DUI comes as no surprise to those who have been following his career.

This is unfortunate for the Titans, who are close to being a playoff caliber team and just need a few breaks to take their team to the next level.

Unfortunately, Britt's arrest casts a shadow on the Titans' doings throughout training camp. When an arrest is the biggest story at a team's training camp, there is a major problem.

Britt is an offensive difference maker who would make the offense that much more explosive, but unfortunately, he could very well be suspended or at least distracted for most of the season.

His most recent legal troubles are hardly surprising at this point, but as Britt continues to make stupid mistakes, the negative press just keeps accumulating as training camp begins.
