USA vs. Great Britain: Anthony Davis' Game-Changing Presence Is No Surprise

Ian HanfordJun 7, 2018

Anthony Davis changes games. He made that evident from the moment he stepped onto the floor with Kentucky last season, and he's making it very apparent so far in his brief Olympic career.

Davis played in his first Olympic warm-up game on Friday against Great Britain. Some 19-year-old players would have balked at their first opportunity to play with Team USA, but not Davis. He delivered his usual well-rounded performance.

He only played 13 minutes, but he scored 11 points and blocked four shots. That's just another day at the office for Davis. He blocked four shots on a regular basis under John Calipari last season.

Some people may be surprised by Davis' production, but why? It's hard to believe that a normal 19-year-old could step up on this stage—in his first appearance—and not skip a beat. However, Davis has already taught us that he isn't a normal 19-year-old basketball player.

Davis is special until proven otherwise. He's cut from a rare cloth, a talented player in every conceivable area. The only knock on his NBA game is his wiry-thin frame, but it hasn't stopped him thus far.

Davis is a cerebral player. He understands his strengths so well that his strength isn't an issue. Against Great Britain on Friday, he proved that. Davis patrolled the front of the rim as usual and showed solid scoring touch.

He plays with a presence well beyond his years. He impacts the game whether the ball is in his hands or not, perhaps more so when it isn't.

Davis' big-time performance off the bench against Great Britain doesn't cement him as an NBA star, but it shows his ability to adapt. The Olympics are a different animal, and Davis played well in his debut.

It will be interesting to see Davis against competition in London, but this is a great sign from the NBA's newest No. 1 pick.

Davis has exceeded expectations on every occasion. This summer, it shouldn't surprise anyone.
