Huge Backstage News on Christian: Who Had the Idea for Him Going to ECW?

Joe Burgett Feb 19, 2009

Many Christan Cage supporters have been asking why he was sent to ECW. I was asked about a million times why he was sent there. But I couldn't say I knew 100 percent on why he went there.

But now insiders have been able to get an answer. Word from prowrestling.net is that Cage went to ECW because of both Vince McMahon and SmackDown writer Michael Hayes.

Of course I, as well as other writers, have been saying that the idea for Cage was a last-minute decision made by the WWE. And that is now confirmed by Jason Powell of prowrestling.net, who is a respected insider.

See the plans changed the Friday before the Royal Rumble. And of course the WWE realized that the plans were not going to surprise anyone. But that was not the only reason for the change.

Sure, Matt Hardy turned on Jeff was a great surprise, but actually Vince changed it because he does not think that Cage is a main-event level guy. He does however think he is a upper mid-card guy.

According to prowrestling.net

"RAW writer Brian Gewirtz asked about bringing him to RAW after Matt got the spot on SmackDown, but there was concern he would end up like D-Lo Brown - just hired and forgot about without getting a chance.

They came up with the idea to give him a new feud with someone Vince is high on, that being Jack Swagger. They felt the longer they didn't get him on TV, the more likely he'd end up never to get going and this was the best thing they had for him.

The original idea for the ECW show had the same opener with the two but several segments were planned that showed Christian meeting the talent on the brand and putting him over like it was a big thing he was there.

The actual match was booked to be a short sprint for him to shine some more, ending with Swagger getting counted out or some crazy no contest. Vince ended up changing the show to what it ended up being. It was seen internally as Vince having no vision of Christian as a star."

So why would Cage join up with the WWE if he was going to be put back in the same light? Well he won't be if Hayes can help it. Cage is slated to be drafted to the SmackDown brand at the WWE draft in April.

With the sais Hayes would be the one mainly in charge of Cage there. He is very respected by Vince and he only changed the Jeff Hardy attacker idea because he agreed with Vince. However it was his call.

If that is so then he could make Cage a World Champion after he is drafted there. With the possible Edge feud, it would work. He also has history with both Hardys. And with Triple H heading to SmackDown, there is really only four in contention for the World Title.

The idea for Cage being on ECW is good only because ECW could put him int he title hunt right away, where he couldn't be in RAW or SmackDown.

I mean you have the title matches between Cena and Edge, and then Triple H and Orton. Which means that Cage would not have a good chance to do well at that point.

Word is that he will lose his ECW Title match with Swagger next week. Then he will win his way into the Money in the Bank Ladder Match at Wrestlemania. Which means he would get his Wrestlemania spotlight.

That means that he could possibly win the match and go onto take the title off a Champion. Most likely Edge on SmackDown. So that would get him his World Title in the WWE and he could be a transitional champion.

If he does well, then I'm sure Vince will want the World Title on him more. He did well with the TNA World Title twice. So I'm sure he will do well in the WWE.

All that is certain is that Cage went to ECW mainly because of both Michael Hayes and Vince McMahon. But then it was Hayes who made the final call. Possibly because he would have to write him into SmackDown.

Vince may not be high on him, but if Hayes is, then he will get his shot. Vince did not like Edge to start with, and look at him now. An eight-time World Champion. Two World Titles in 2009 alone.

He has won three World Titles within three months, something I don't think anyone has done. So if Hayes makes the call, in the end, Cage will have a good bit of World Titles.

But what do you think, will he do well in the WWE despite Vince clearly not being high on him?
