What to Watch For
While every crowd at a major golf event gives most of its attention to Tiger Woods, the spectators on hand in Lancashire will also be keeping a close eye on Luke Donald and Lee Westwood.
Donald and Westwood rank first and third in the world, respectively. Both are English and neither has won a major in their careers.
Westwood has come painstakingly close and has recorded two second-place finishes and three third-place finishes.
Donald has not shown the same pattern of falling just short, and has stayed quietly consistent in order to top the world rankings.
The two golfers will receive an added boost from a crowd of their compatriots, and it could be just enough to propel one of them to a first win at a major.
As for Woods, he is still searching for his first victory at one of golf’s four biggest tournaments since scandalous details about his personal life became public.
He has shown signs of the “Old Tiger” by winning three PGA Tour events this year, but his performances at the majors have been disappointing.
His excellent performances at lesser tournaments have teased golf fans everywhere. The sports world is ready for Woods to be back on top, and he must win a major to do that.
Woods will get a shot to continue his climb during the British Open and the PGA Championship. If 2012 ends and he has not won a major, there will be legions of disappointed fans.
Regardless of all that is happening at Royal Lytham and St. Anne’s, Woods’ performance at the tournament will still dominate headlines.
