Dwight Howard: What Possible Extension to Los Angeles Lakers Means for Team

Sebastian MaldonadoJun 7, 2018

Dwight Howard seems set for a move to Hollywood.

The latest reports from ESPN said Howard would not only approve a trade to the Lakers but would also sign an extension with the team.

This is exactly the news players and fans have been waiting for.

It gives LA another talented center acquired from another team. Howard would join the likes of Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Shaquille O’Neal as talented big men coming to Los Angeles.

That lineage of big men all won titles with the Lakers. The trend will continue if Howard is traded and signs an extension.

If Howard does sign, it would make the Lakers more formidable than ever.

You have the veteran leadership of Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash to guide Howard and make him an even better player. Plus, Howard can become the distraction Bryant needs to score even more points. He would become the new O’Neal of Los Angeles, dominating the court and bringing defenders around him.

The current roster for the 2012-13 campaign also has veterans Pau Gasol and Metta World Peace. If neither are traded, they can also benefit from the acquisition of Howard.

Gasol and Howard would become a deadly one-two combo in the frontcourt, possibly even becoming the next David Robinson and Tim Duncan.

If those players stay, their potential starting five looks amazing. Forget about the Big Three. You would be looking at the Fantastic Five.

Nash’s leadership skills with Bryant’s determination and will are tough enough to beat. Keeping Gasol and Peace give more options to a strong Lakers team.

Adding Howard would make the Lakers nearly unstoppable in their quest for an NBA title.

All that remains is Howard signing on the dotted line once he is dealt to the Lakers.
