2014 Winter Olympics: Power Ranking the New Winter Events

Samuel BensonJun 7, 2018

You probably saw this article and thought, "What the heck? I thought the Summer Olympics are coming up."

If so, you are correct. But the International Olympic Committee recently announced that five events that will be played for the first time in Sochi.

Like they already don't have enough competitions.

Here are my power rankings of the five Winter Olympic events.

5. Women's Ski Jumping

1 of 5

This new event is the same as men's ski jumping, just with women. If you are unfamiliar with the sport, a skier rides down a ramp and after gaining momentum, jumps at the bottom. The skier is judged on distance and style.

Really, there is no difference between women's and men's ski jumping. There is no way that I can rank it any higher.

4. Team Figure Skating

2 of 5

The new team figure skating event is practically traditional figure skating times, well, six. Instead of two skaters competing, there are 12 people combined.

Each team consists of six skaters (one male, one female, one ice dance couple and one skating pair). Every skater or group is awarded points, and when the points are added up, the team with the most wins.

Personally, it doesn't seem like something I would love to watch.

3. Ski Halfpipe

3 of 5

The skicross and snowboard halfpipe events have been so popular that it only make sense to make another similar event—but on skis.

If you haven't seen the snowboard halfpipe events before, I suggest you look up Shaun White's highlights. With that in mind, imagine the competitors now on skis.

That will sure be an event that I will watch.

2. Biathlon Mixed Relay

4 of 5

The new biathlon event is somewhat of a mix of cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Each competitor skis a 7.5 kilometer leg (six kilometers for women), and afterward, they shoot two rounds (one prone, one standing).

My favorite part: For every mixed target, they have to ski another lap of 150 meters.

Dang, they'll probably feel like they're being punished by their middle school trainer again.

1. Luge Team Relay

5 of 5

This will be the most exciting and fun event to watch that will be added in 2014. Each team is made up of two singles sleds (a male and a female) and a doubles sled. From there, it is a high-speed relay—one competitor goes after the other.

The first team to have three athletes touch a pad at the finish line wins the race.

So, if a driver misses the pad or forgets to touch it, he is out of luck.
