Tiger Woods and Top Contenders
Tiger Woods got off to a scorching start at Royal Lytham on Thursday, knocking in four birdies early to put himself ahead of the pack. The three-time Open champ is gunning for a fourth this summer, but will have to outlast some tough competition to claim yet another Claret Jug.
Meanwhile, Lee Westwood will attempt to bring home his first major win in his native country after experiencing disappointment when he finished second at St. Andrews in 2010. Greg Owen and Lee Slattery are two other Englishmen that will be aiming at bringing the British Open title back to England this July. There hasn't been an English winner since Nick Faldo in 1992.
Besides Woods and Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson should also find themselves on fans' radars. Neither golfer has ever won the British Open, but Mickelson is a multiple-major winner and McIlroy and Watson have each won big-time tournaments recently, with the American Watson fighting back to take the Masters last spring.
