Boxer Arrested for 2009 Robbery After Bloody Q-Tip Reveals DNA
I don't condone robbery or any form of burglary. Just as a means of advice, if you do sink so low, stay clear of contact sports where your blood may be spilled.
The Detroit News (h/t Big Lead Sports) reports boxer Martin Tucker was arrested Tuesday and charged with robbing a bank and using a firearm during a crime of violence way back in 2009.
It took years and one fortunate misstep by Tucker for the FBI to nab the alleged thief.
Tucker was the victor in a four-round boxing match against Devarise Crayton back in April. There weren't many in attendance, although Francis X. Donnelly who files the report mentions Buster Douglas and Tommy "The Hitman" Hearns were there to take the bout in.
The other important person in attendance was FBI agent Robert Schmitz who would confiscate a bloody Q-Tip used on Tucker during his winning bout.
That important piece of evidence was allegedly matched to a bloody ski mask agents had in their possession.
"It began in July 2009 when two men clutching semiautomatic weapons walked into the Monroe County Community Credit Union in Temperance. Both wore ski masks, hooded sweatshirts and gloves.
The men got $5,379 and jumped into a car, driven by a third person, according to the affidavit by Schmitz.
They drove three miles, crossing into Ohio, before abandoning the vehicle in the driveway of a private home in Toledo. The car had been stolen earlier in the day from a different Toledo home.
"
The men then stripped off their clothes and left them at the scene. Some of the evidence lead police to a man named Quentin A. Sherer, whom they had a DNA file of because of past robberies.
Still, they had DNA of another suspect and no match on record.
Looking through Sherer's Myspace page, he found a picture with Tucker. The boxer matched the physical attributes stated by witnesses, giving him the only hunch he needed to pay close attention to a middling boxer.
One bloody nose later, the FBI had a man who thought he was well done with a crime he allegedly committed three years prior.
The most bizarre aspect to the story is finding out Myspace is still being used.
