Seattle Sounders vs. Chelsea: European Champs Will Spoil Roger Levesque's Finale

Patrick ClarkeJun 5, 2018

Chelsea will spoil Seattle Sounders legend Roger Levesque's final outing on the pitch Wednesday night at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Washington.

Levesque, one of the more entertaining and influential players in MLS history, will get to taste professional competition for the last time against the defending European champions, retiring immediately after the matchup with the Blues.

He is headed to the University of Washington to chase down a degree in business, according to The Seattle Times

"I'm going to miss the guys, that camaraderie you can't get anywhere else, but I feel like I'm leaving on a positive note. There's no doubt in my mind this team is going to sort things out and continue in the right direction." - Roger Levesque via The Seattle Times

Soccer fans have to respect Levesque for his decision to better himself and prepare for life after the Sounders.

Levesque has scored 40 goals for the Sounders in nearly 200 appearances dating back to 2003, when he was loaned out to Seattle from the San Jose Earthquakes.

Despite Levesque's legacy and history of brilliance, the 31-year-old will wind up on the losing end against the English Premier League's formidable representative.

It has to happen that way.

Although the storybook ending where Levesque drops in the winning goal would be ESPY-worthy, it's sadly a case of too good to be true.

My prediction for Wednesday night's match is that Chelsea takes it 2-1 in front of a crowd full of bittersweet emotion. For Seattle, the friendly will be more about watching and enjoying Levesque for the last time.

But for the visiting Blues, it's business as usual.

Chelsea will likely be playing world class talents in Frank Lampard, David Luiz and Ramires. Though the Sounders will be ultra focused on representing the MLS well in this summer friendly, the two clubs on two very different levels.

Thank yous are in order for Roger Levesque, but Chelsea will ultimately spoil his and Seattle's competitive hopes.
