British Open Field 2012: Breaking Down the Best and Worst of the Field

Josh SchochJun 1, 2018

The 2012 British Open field is separated into two categories: Those who can win the Open Championship, and those who simply can't.

From the field favorites like Tiger Woods down to the scrubs like Richard Finch and Matthew Baldwin, the field is one of the best in years, but there remains the line which separates the two sides of the field.

Let's take a look at the best and worst in the field at the 2012 British Open.

The Best

1 of 3

Tiger Woods

He looks like his old self again, and Tiger will try to capture his first major since 2008 at the Open Championship.

He's already won three times this year, and is looking to add a fourth to his already impressive 2012 campaign.

Lee Westwood

Tiger's top challenger, Westwood will look to use his defensive putting strategy to try to top the world's best.

He'll try to tame the greens at Royal Lytham and pull ahead of the pack. If he can putt well throughout the tournament, he'll be in great shape on Sunday.

Padraig Harrington

The famous Irishman is looking for the fourth major championship of his career, and will try to win it at the British Open.

He's already won the Open Championship twice, and after his recent play, he has to be considered as one of the favorites in the field.

The Worst

2 of 3

Richard Finch

It would take a miracle for Richard Finch to avoid being cut at the Open Championship. He has struggled in recent play and barely made it into the field.

I'd be shocked to see him playing over the weekend.

Matthew Baldwin

Baldwin is another golfer who probably won't be seen at Royal Lytham over the weekend.

He will have problems with the course over the first two days, and he will probably be cut after Friday's action.

Darren Clarke

The reigning British Open champ, Clarke is trying to shock the world twice. However, he is among the worst golfers in the field this year.

Despite his success last year, he will probably be cut during this year's tournament.
