Dez Bryant and NFL's Most Troubled Superstars

Zach KruseJul 17, 2012

NFL training camps simply can't get here fast enough.

During the dead period of the NFL offseason, several high-profile players—including one of the latest, Dez Bryant of the Dallas Cowboys—have found their names being read over police scanners across the country.

There have been DUI arrests, assaults and other crimes to make up for more than one NFL offseason.

In the following slides, we'll run down some of the NFL's more troubled superstars, including Bryant. It's a list that could be very long, but we'll try to keep it short enough.

Dez Bryant, Dallas Cowboys

To be perfectly fair, Monday's arrest was the first of its kind for Bryant since he's entered the NFL.

According to FOX4 in Dallas-Fort Worth, Bryant turned himself into police Monday for domestic violence against a family member, who is believed to be his mother. If convicted, the charge against Bryant carries a maximum $4,000 fine and up to one year in jail.

But while Monday's incident is Bryant's first-ever arrest, it does not mark the first time he's been in trouble since entering the NFL in 2010 as the Cowboys' first-round pick.

Bryant was also involved in a fight at a Miami Beach nightclub in January of this year, but no arrests were made. Before that, Bryant was kicked out of a mall for wearing his pants too low and faced court time over a unpaid debt with a jewelry maker.

It will be interesting to see how both the NFL and Cowboys handle Bryant's latest mishap, but Rick Gosselin of the Dallas News wrote Tuesday that the Cowboys should suspend Bryant for up to four games for "conduct detrimental to the team."

For one of the game's more troubled young players, a suspension from his own club might be just the wake-up call Bryant needs.

Marshawn Lynch, Seattle Seahawks

Lynch is a repeat offender in the eyes of the NFL, and his latest arrest for DUI is likely to end in a hefty suspension for the Seahawks' top rusher over the last two seasons.

The San Jose Mercury News reported Tuesday morning that Lynch was arrested on suspicion of DUI Saturday in Oakland, where he blew over the legal limit of .08 BAC after being pulled over on a traffic stop.

More than likely, Saturday's slip-up will cost Lynch games during the 2012 season.

He was already suspended three games in 2009 after a string of incidents that included striking a pedestrian outside a Buffalo bar and then later pleading guilty to a misdemeanor weapons charge.

As a repeat offender, Lynch will likely serve a harsher penalty this time around. Losing four games to start the 2012 season is certainly in the cards for the troubled Lynch.

Detroit Lions 2011 Draft Class

Defensive tackle Nick Fairley and running back Mikel Leshoure—the Lions' top picks in the 2011 NFL draft—have been arrested twice this offseason.

For Fairley, a possession of marijuana charge was followed by a DUI just months later, according to FOX10 in Mobile, Alabama. He's likely to spend some time watching from the sidelines to start 2012.

Leshoure, who missed all of the 2011 season with a torn Achilles, was busted twice this offseason for marijuana possession, and the NFL came down with a two-game suspension for the former Illinois back to start next season.

Second-round pick Titus Young was also banned from Lions' OTAs after getting into an altercation with safety Louis Delmas, and backup offensive tackle Johnny Culbreath, a seventh-round pick in 2011, was also arrested for marijuana possession, according to the Times and Democrat

Adam Jones, Cincinnati Bengals

4 of 5

Jones' troubles off-field are well-documented, and one of his more ugly incidents was brought back into the public eye this offseason when a Las Vegas court ruled that Jones owes over $11 million for his role in a strip-club shooting back in 2007.

For a player riddled with legal problems in the past and scheduled to make just $700,000 in base salary this next season, that amount is an obvious problem.

Other arrests include a disorderly conduct and public intoxication charge in 2011 and 2006, misdemeanor assault in 2006, marijuana possession in 2006 and assault and felony vandalism in 2005, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune's arrest database

Cedric Benson, Free Agent

5 of 5

Benson, who is currently a free agent after spending a number of years with the Chicago Bears and Cincinnati Bengals, has a sizable lists of run-ins with law enforcement since joining the NFL.

His latest came in 2011, when Benson was charged with domestic violence against a family member.

In 2010, Benson was taken into custody after he allegedly punched a bar worker in the face. He was charged with misdemeanor assault.

Within a 35-day stretch in 2008, Benson was arrested twice for driving under the influence. The first came while he was operating a motor boat in Texas—a charge that included resisting arrest—and the latter arrest came in a car he was driving in Austin.

Benson has been clean for 12 months now, but he's still one of the game's more troubled names.

Note: All arrest information came from the San Diego Union-Tribune's NFL arrest database
