WWE Money in the Bank 2012 Results: John Cena's Win Is Perfect SummerSlam Setup

Adam WellsJun 2, 2018

WWE has not done a lot of things right, especially with the WWE championship this year, but having John Cena win a Money In the Bank match to earn a title contract whenever he wants is a good start to repairing a lot of things.

In fact, the way WWE and Cena have set up one of the SummerSlam main events in one night was as strong a finish to any pay-per-view as the company has had since WrestleMania.

Cena will, in all likelihood, end up challenging CM Punk for the title. Presumably that match will take place at SummerSlam, though I could see WWE trying to rush the match for the 1,000th Raw to try and pop the rating even though that show already has The Rock, Mick Foley, Brock Lesnar, Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Bret Hart and anyone else who decides to show up.

While we will have to wait until the 999th episode of Raw tonight to figure out what plans are in store for Cena and Punk, the fact that WWE has its key SummerSlam championship match in place is perfect.

Planning out a long-term program has not been in WWE's wheelhouse for quite some time. Even though this is not exactly a long-term program—SummerSlam is just four weeks away—it is progress for this company and, especially, this creative team.

Cena in the championship spotlight is a good thing for WWE. As much as I hate his constant no-selling of wins and losses, the title has not felt like an important piece of the puzzle since Cena was last in the mix. Even then it wasn't a huge piece, but it still felt like something.

The company has to devote most of its energy in the coming months to making the title feel like more than just a prop that two guys are fighting over while a crazy lady tries to decide who she wants wearing the belt.

Giving Cena a briefcase gives the company the best setup it needs for the title. Punk is a more than worthy adversary since we know what those two are capable of in the ring. We just have to see how the story plays out.
