WWE Money in the Bank 2012: WWE Title Match Lacked Creativity

David DanielsJun 7, 2018

Shocker.

On Sunday night, CM Punk defeated Daniel Bryan in the WWE’s 2012 Money in the Bank event. If you saw that coming a mile away, raise your hand.

While the match itself was entertaining, it would’ve really shaken up the professional wrestling world if Bryan would’ve stole Punk’s WWE Championship belt. Now, though, the competitors are simply living the storyline that everyone and their mother expected.

OK, you can put your hand back down now.

Sean Grande, play-by-play announcer for the Boston Celtics, noted the historic length of Punk’s streak after the match. He tweeted:

"

With the win, @CMPunk is now 10 days away from the 10th longest WWE title reign in the last 25 years. #Kayfabermetrics

— Sean Grande (@SeanGrandePBP) July 16, 2012"

The WWE is really driving this rivalry into the ground. Punk and Bryan have faced off against one another a whopping 11 times since May 20th. During that time span, Punk has owned Bryan for the most part. He won eight of those matches and obviously triumphed in every championship bout.

Sure, Punk is an amusing character. On Saturday, for instance, he created a stir on Twitter with a jab at A.J. Styles. He tweeted a response to a fan:

"

“@MarkMcKeown1987: met AJ Styles at indy show. Made me cover up my CM Punk shirt if I wanted a photo with him. Heat still?”Envy is a sin.

— CM Punk (@CMPunk) July 15, 2012"

But forget Punk. How about something different?

When a product like the WWE’s gets predictable, the desire to buy the product plummets. If you already know what the outcome of the match is, why purchase it? Just watch reruns.

While it’ll be interesting to see Punk live another day as a champion, it would’ve been more interesting to see him get knocked off. That would’ve taken this rivalry the WWE is attempting to sell to a whole new level.
