Indiana Basketball: What Impact Can Yogi Ferrell Make in 2012-2013?

Eric SmithJun 7, 2018

I think Yogi Ferrell will make a huge impact on this Hoosier team. I believe when the first game tips off he will be the starting point guard. I think having him on this roster as the point guard will be enough to win Indiana a National Championship.

Indiana has lacked that dynamic point guard for years. Last year, they made it all the way to the Sweet 16 with Jordan Hulls running the point. Nothing against Hulls, but he's not a point guard. He's a true shooting guard and I think with Ferrell taking over for Hulls will lead to a big season as well.

Hulls isn't the only one who will benefit from Ferrell being in Bloomington. The whole roster will. Ferrell isn't a score-first point guard. Don't get me wrong, the kid can flat out score if you let him, but that's not what he wants to do. He's very good at finding the open man and making others better; imagine how much better Cody Zeller, Christian Watford or Victor Oladipo can be.

Indiana becomes a fast-paced, high-powered team with Ferrell. He's such a great ball handler and rarely turns the ball over. That's something Indiana struggled at times with last year as they struggled to get into an offense.

Imagine a Hoosiers team in the halfcourt maximizing their possessions with under five turnovers a game and getting open shots.

Now, imagine that same team having the capability to run the floor on misses and having a Steve Nash-type point guard feeding open men. I expect Indiana to average in the 80s for points per game with this new offense, and Ferrell will be the key.

I think he will be not only freshman of the year in the Big-10, but if Indiana is as successful as I think, he will also be in the running for national freshman of the year. He's just too good and if you play off of him he will kill you with his dangerous jump shot. Then, if defenders play up he can drive by literally anyone and either hit open lay-ups or find open men when the help-side comes over to attempt to stop him.

It's going to be a fun four years watching Ferrell as he's definitely the best true point guard to hit campus since Isiah Thomas.
