Team USA Goalkeeper Hope Solo Admits to Being Drunk on "Today" Show

Gabe ZaldivarJul 13, 2012

Back in 2008, the U.S. Women won gold in Beijing. They were interviewed live on Today, including star goalkeeper Hope Solo, and she was drunk.

As ESPN the Magazine releases its Body Issue, it revealed a great more than just the naked bodies of some big-name athletes.

Some interviews actually shed light on the party behind the party. We are, of course, talking about the freshman dorm scene attributed to the Olympic village. Apparently, Caligula would be a fan.

Solo recounts about the time she won gold and was tasked with giving an interview on Today, while still reeling from the night before.

Here is the quote, via ESPN, that may cause quite the stir with many, none of which will have trained their entire lives to win gold.

"

I probably shouldn't tell you this, but we met a bunch of celebrities. Vince Vaughn partied with us. Steve Byrne, the comedian. And at some point we decided to take the party back to the village, so we started talking to the security guards, showed off our gold medals, got their attention and snuck our group through without credentials—which is absolutely unheard of. I may have snuck a celebrity back to my room without anybody knowing, and snuck him back out. But that's my Olympic secret. When we were done partying, we got out of our nice dresses, got back into our stadium coats and, at 7 a.m. with no sleep, went on the Today show drunk. Needless to say, we looked like hell.

"

OMG!

Some may consider this a deplorable act taken by a representative of the USA. Well, I will counter with an argument that is bullet proof.

You're wrong.

The U.S. Women's Team is forced to play the duration of the Olympics without enjoying the fun and frivolity around them.

They finally win the gold, something they have beaten themselves over their entire lives for. They sacrifice late nights with their pals so they can train in the morning. They eat right and make sure to measure their recreation activities, all while we hit up happy hours and enjoy a beer after work.

They do this so they can wear a little medal that means everything.

Hell, go on live TV with an actual beer in your hand for all I care.

As for the video, Die Hard Sport found the 2008 interview wherein Solo was drunk. As you can see, Solo handles her scandal rather well.

She may have a slight hiccup in delivery here and there, but nothing that can't be attributed to exhaustion.

I know I have bumbled far worse in front of parents long ago in a family room far away.

The Summer Olympics will feature many athletes who sacrificed a great deal of their youth to compete. They do this while we sit on our fat butts and watch them on TV.

I, for one, don't care if they party like champs afterward.
