WWE Money in the Bank 2012: Why Stars Must Be Added to WWE Title Ladder Match

Mike ChiariJun 6, 2018

The WWE Championship contract Money in the Bank ladder match is currently set to feature John Cena, Chris Jericho, Big Show and Kane on Sunday. While the premise of having only former WWE Champions in the contest is solid, the WWE brass ought to add at least two more competitors for the sake of entertainment value.

There are a lot of differing opinions with regards to this particular match.

Some like the simplicity of only having four wrestlers in it, while others believe it detracts from what Money in the Bank is all about. I tend to side with the latter sentiment as a big part of the fun when it comes to Money in the Bank ladder matches, as it is the chaos that ensues thanks to six, eight or even 10 men being in the ring at once.

Instead, the WWE Championship contract bout is little more than a Fatal Four Way ladder match, and that is something that has been seen many times. I don't anticipate any late changes being made since the WWE has advertised this match as is for the past couple weeks, but there is no reason why at least two guys can't be added during the pay-per-view on Sunday night.

There would be a simple way to make it happen and a more difficult, yet more entertaining way as well. The easiest thing to do would be to select Vickie Guerrero and Teddy Long as co-general managers for the night and give each of them the option to add one person to the contest. Vickie could throw in The Miz since they're both heels and Teddy could go with Rey Mysterio since they're both faces.

Miz figures to be returning from filming The Marine 3, Mysterio is ready to return from his combination of injuries and suspension, and both are former WWE Champions, so they fit in seamlessly with the theme of the match. I expect Cena to win either way, but Miz and Mysterio would add to the bout since Miz is a former Money in the Bank winner and Mysterio can perform some high-risk spots that will be missing otherwise.

If the WWE feels like getting really creative, though, I would like to see two last-chance qualifying matches added. The card is extremely thin as of right now with only two Money in the Bank ladder matches, the World Heavyweight Championship match and the WWE Championship match scheduled.

There is also a throwaway tag-team match pitting Kofi Kingston and R-Truth against Hunico and Camacho, but that will air on the pre-show.

There are plenty of possibilities for something like this; former WWE Champions who appeared recently such as Sycho Sid or Bob Backlund could compete in the qualifying matches for novelty's sake with Miz and Mysterio obviously coming out on top. It would also leave the door open for John Bradshaw Layfield to have a match, or even Randy Orton to return early from suspension.

I realize that if Orton were to compete at Money in the Bank, he would be coming back over a week before he is supposed to, but perhaps the WWE would allow for some wiggle room. It is pretty unlikely since it appears as though the company is trying to make an example out of Orton, but for the sake of the pay-per-view, Orton could return, qualify and instantly add some more star power to the ladder match.

Failing that, there could even be a battle royal featuring the aforementioned superstars as well as perhaps Sgt. Slaughter, Mick Foley, Kevin Nash and even a returning Ric Flair. This may not appeal to everyone since it will be obvious that the older superstars won't qualify for the match, but it would make for great nostalgia and it would make the undercard much stronger as well.

Money in the Bank has the potential to be a very good pay-per-view, but since there are only four scheduled matches, all of them will have to be excellent in order for that to come to fruition.

I don't envision the WWE Championship contract ladder match being great as it is currently set up, but if the WWE is willing to add some competitors, then perhaps that can change.
