How to Fix the Houston Rockets' Biggest Weaknesses Next Season

Danny DukkerJun 7, 2018

The Houston Rockets finished their 2012 campaign which saw the Rockets miss the playoffs by just two games.

They are also a team that has seen some major changes this offseason and the hope is that Houston will be in the playoffs next year.

In order to accomplish this they will have to fix certain mistakes and improve the weaknesses that left them out of the postseason. Here are some solutions.

Consistency

The Rockets were a very hot and cold team last season. They went on large winning streaks only to have them followed by major collapses.

Unfortunately, they hit a major cold streak at the very end of the season and only won three of their last ten games.

To fix this, McHale's game strategy is going to have to improve. He needs to find a way to keep the players focused throughout the season so that long droughts can be avoided.

The coach is the one to blame for the roller coaster of a season in Houston and while it is the players job to play their best, the coach needs to keep them on track.

Hopefully, with this being McHale's first full season coaching, the Rockets will avoid the same type of season next year.

Defense

So far, the Rockets have managed to trade away both Marcus Camby and Samuel Dalembert to greatly hurt their interior defense.

Considering the Rockets were 19th in points allowed this year it is fair to say that number will not improve this season.

The first thing Houston should do is get Courtney Lee back on the roster to help their perimeter defense.

Then they could try to find a defensive player through trades. Dwight Howard would be a solid pick up obviously and recent reports suggest this is a possibility.

If they get Howard, their interior defense is set and with Dwight they should not regress on the defensive end.

Athleticism

The picture really says it all.

If the Rockets want to help their athleticism they simply have to give good minutes to their rookies. Jeremy Lamb and Terrence Jones are both great athletes that will help Houston run the floor more effectively.

Last year, the roster was slow and had very little in the way of athletic ability. If the Rockets play their young additions, that will change this year.

Rebounding

Terrence Jones will greatly help them in this department, but the loss of their two bigs will definitely hurt. As stated previously, if Dwight comes to Houston, this is no longer a serious issue.

At this point, it's a huge problem and a serious question mark, but with Howard it is a whole different story.
