Antawn Jamison Targeted by Cleveland Cavaliers

brandon LamFeb 17, 2009

When the Washington Wizards decided to re-sign veteran leader Antawn Jamison to a $50 million dollar contract this summer, they thought they were making the correct move.

With injuries and a pathetic season, the Wizards might just have to trade away Jamison for financial purposes.

According to multiple sources, the Cleveland Cavaliers have shown significant interest in Jamison. Cleveland has offered to trade Wally Sczcerbiak's expiring contract for Jamison. He is making about $13 million.

Jamison is averaging 21.4 points and nine rebounds this season, and would be great coming off the bench for Cleveland. He would give opponents a hard time in the playoffs.

One NBA executive believes Cleveland will be a championship contender if this trade goes down.

"If Cleveland can get Jamison, that will be a home run."

Jamison would give them a big boost—he can finish games, and he's a slasher who will get more open shots playing with LeBron. I think that would clinch the NBA Finals for Cleveland. Boston would have a tough time.

The Wizards have about $75.9 million committed to contracts for next season, which would put them over the luxury tax threshold. Trading Jamison and renting Sczcerbiak for a half season would not be a bad plan.

Since Cleveland would get the better of the trade, the Wizards would likely want them to take on Etan Thomas' contract as well.  Thomas will make $7.35 next season. That may be too much for Cleveland to deal with.

A deal for Jamison is far from being completed, according to league sources. However, the Cavaliers have become more aggressive in trying to improve at the deadline for a title push this spring.

The trade deadline is almost 20 hours away—we will see what happens.
