NFL Supplemental Draft 2012: Start Time and Top Prospects to Watch

Mike ChiariJul 12, 2012

It may not be a spectacle like the NFL draft, but the NFL's supplemental draft is certainly something that bears watching for football fans.

The draft will take place via email today, and while it is possible there won't even be a single pick, there have been some interesting selections in the past which make it a worthwhile venture.

Players like Bernie Kosar, Brian Bosworth, Cris Carter and Terrelle Pryor have been picked in the supplemental draft over the years, and despite the fact that most supplemental choices haven't amounted to much, there is always the possibility a diamond in the rough is out there waiting to be plucked.

Here is all the information you need to know for the 2012 supplemental draft, including the start time and prospects with a chance of being selected.

When: Thursday, July 12 at 1 p.m. ET

Top Prospects to Watch

Josh Gordon

There is no question former Baylor wide receiver Josh Gordon is the most hyped player in this year's supplemental draft and has the greatest chance of being selected.

At 6'3" and 224 lbs., Gordon is a physical specimen who impressed at his pre-draft workouts. The main concern with Gordon is character, as he transferred to Utah prior to last season after failing a drug test while at Baylor.

Gordon was very productive in 2010, however, with Robert Griffin III throwing him passes. The wide out caught seven touchdowns on the season and really clicked with RG3.

Griffin, of course, was the Washington Redskins' top selection this year, so they could be in the running for the talented receiver's services. Gordon is a developmental prospect, but some team is likely to take a chance on him.

Ed Wesley

Perhaps nobody other than Gordon will be taken in the supplemental draft, but TCU running back Ed Wesley is probably next in line.

At 5'9" and 200 lbs., Wesley has decent size and was productive at the collegiate level, rushing for 1,078 yards as the starter in 2010. His production dipped after he was forced into a timeshare last season, but Wesley has some ability and could draw a team in.

I doubt any team would use higher than a sixth- or seventh-round pick on Wesley, but it's simply a matter of whether teams believe a more talented prospect will be available at that point in the 2013 NFL draft. I don't believe there will be, so the chances of a team taking a flier on Wesley are pretty good.

Larry Lumpkin

Coming out of Carson-Newman, not many people know about linebacker Larry Lumpkin. After his strong workout, however, he is certainly on the radar of several teams.

The 6'0", 241-pound specimen had a well-traveled collegiate career, but if he gets picked on Thursday it will be based on his potential and not what he has already accomplished.

Lumpkin has experience at every linebacker position as well as defensive end, so he is a guy who could fit into essentially any defensive system.

Lumpkin would be somewhat of a developmental prospect like Gordon, so teams may be hesitant to spend a pick on him. The most likely scenarios for him are either being picked in the seventh round or catching on with a team as an undrafted free agent, which wouldn't be a bad thing from his perspective.
