Top-40 Song to Describe Each MLB Team Heading into the Second Half

Mark MillerJul 12, 2012

It's hard to believe we've already come this far, but the unofficial start to the second half of the season is just a day away, and baseball fans across the country will be watching intently as many storylines play themselves out.

These seasons certainly won't all end like a fairytale, but with the help of America's Top-40 Countdown, let's take a look at how every major league team's second halves stack up when compared to the country's biggest hit songs.

Arizona Diamondbacks

1 of 30

Song: Brokenhearted

Artist: Karmin

Just last fall the Arizona Diamondbacks were taking part in a hotly contested NLDS matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers, and while they ultimately fell short, their performance was definitely enough to give hope for the 2012 season.

At the midway point, however, the D-Backs find themselves with the most losses in baseball (53) and are 13 games out in the NL West.

Atlanta Braves

2 of 30

Song: Don't Stop

Artist: Foster the People

The Atlanta Braves spent much of the 2011 season primed for a postseason appearance, but things quickly fell apart towards the end of the season, and their collapse ultimately sent them into the offseason without October baseball.

This year, the Braves' faithful are certainly hoping their team doesn't stop winning early like they did last year, though they'll have an uphill battle in the second half as they chase the red hot Nationals.

Baltimore Orioles

3 of 30

Song: International Love

Artist: Pitbull ft. Chris Brown

The Baltimore Orioles have had their share of struggles in recent seasons, finding it increasingly difficult to work their way towards the top of the tough AL East.

This offseason, they showed some international love in bringing in players that have helped push them back to the top, and while they're seven games back of the Yankees right now, they may be able to climb back into the race even further with some July acquisitions.

Boston Red Sox

4 of 30

Song: The One That Got Away

Artist: Katy Perry

The Boston Red Sox had their share of struggles early this season, and while Kevin Youkilis wasn't put in the best situation to succeed, he wasn't exactly helping the team with his performance early on.

After ultimately being traded to Chicago, Youkilis appears to be headed back to his old self and has made a great impact on the White Sox's chances at a postseason appearance.

Chicago Cubs

5 of 30

Song: Mr. Know It All

Artist: Kelly Clarkson

After remaining relatively quiet during the offseason, new GM Theo Epstein may be making some waves this summer as players like Matt Garza, Ryan Dempster or even Alfonso Soriano could be finding their way out of Chicago.

Only time will tell in deciding what the team is getting in return, but they certainly hope Epstein really is "Mr. Know It All."

Chicago White Sox

6 of 30

Song: Forget You

Artist: Cee-Lo Green

As mentioned, Kevin Youkilis was sent packing from Boston after a not-so-private thought process by Bobby Valentine and management decided that he wasn't in the future plans of the franchise.

He struggled his way through the early part of the season as the rumors surrounded, but he has found a home in Chicago and is doing his part to show Boston what they're missing.

Cinicnnati Reds

7 of 30

Song: How We Do

Artist: Rita Ora

The Cincinnati Reds had an active offseason in acquiring ace Mat Latos for a number of prospects, and while he's got an ERA north of 4.00 this season, he's posted a 7-2 record. The Reds have to be feeling good about being just one game behind Pittsburgh in the NL Central standings.

Cleveland Indians

8 of 30

Song: Somebody That I Used To Know

Artist: Gotye

The Cleveland Indians made a big investment in Ubaldo Jimenez when they pulled off a blockbuster trade to get him last season, but his 12-11 record and 4.73 ERA since coming over isn't exactly what the team bargained for. They have to be hoping he turns into the ace that they used to know.

Colorado Rockies

9 of 30

Song: Heartbeat

Artist: The Fray

After handing out good money to players like Michael Cuddyer last offseason, the Colorado Rockies probably thought they had a chance at making some headway in the NL West race in 2012.

With a 33-52 record, the team is on life support, 13 games back of the Dodgers and all but out of the race.

Detroit Tigers

10 of 30

Song: Wide Awake

Artist: Katy Perry

The Detroit Tigers came into the 2012 season with massive expectations as Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera were poised to become one of baseball's newest versions of the bash brothers.

They're riding a five-game winning streak right now but will need to be alert for the whole second half as they look to climb from third place into the top of the division.

Houston Astros

11 of 30

Song: A Thousand Years

Artist: Christina Perri

It wasn't that long ago that the Houston Astros found themselves in postseason play, but with Carlos Lee already out of the picture in Houston and Wandy Rodriguez and Brett Myers also possibly heading out, it seems like it could be a long time before this rebuilding team is set to contend once again.

Kansas City Royals

12 of 30

Song: We Are Young

Artist: Fun. & Janelle Monae

There's plenty of excitement in Kansas City this season as the Royals and their faithful are still probably riding the high of hosting the midsummer classic (albeit a pretty uneventful one).

The group of young and talented players who looked ready to put it all together this season haven't really lived up to billing, but you have to like what you see in this group of players, and it shouldn't be long before they're making plenty of noise in the AL Central.

Los Angeles Angels

13 of 30

Song: I Won't Give Up

Artist: Jason Mraz

After making two of the biggest signings in the league last offseason, the Los Angeles Angels may have been a bit alarmed early on as slugger Albert Pujols failed to get off to a good start in April.

He didn't give up and has since come around, and while the team is still a few games out in the West, the division is in no way decided with a half season of games left to play.

Los Angeles Dodgers

14 of 30

Song: Let's Go

Artist: Calvin Harris

After getting off to a blistering start to the season, Matt Kemp's campaign for an MVP trophy was halted due to injury.

He didn't show much in the way of power during this week's Home Run Derby but is set to return to the lineup with the Dodgers and should be ready to get back to business.

Miami Marlins

15 of 30

Song: Glad You Came

Artist: The Wanted

The Miami Marlins have been disappointing at times this season, as their big-time moves haven't all panned out as planned and they find themselves a ways out in the division.

They'll need help if they hope to get back into the race, so they have to be glad the team brought Carlos Lee into the fold to add some extra pop in the lineup.

Milwaukee Brewers

16 of 30

Song: Without You

Artist: David Guetta ft. Usher

With Prince Fielder out of the picture in Milwaukee, it was hard to say exactly how much the Brewers would struggle in 2012 as they did bring Aramis Ramirez in to offset some of the loss.

Currently eight games back in the NL Central, the Brewers could definitely use Fielder's offense as they look to climb out of fourth place.

Minnesota Twins

17 of 30

Song: Call Me Maybe

Artist: Carly Rae Jepsen

It's been another disappointing season in Minnesota for the Twins, as the signing of Josh Willingham and the emergence of Trevor Plouffe as a power source has failed to put the team in the win column.

Currently 11 games out in the AL Central, Twins GM Terry Ryan can expect to be fielding many calls about players that might be available at the deadline.

New York Mets

18 of 30

Song: Where Have You Been

Artist: Rihanna

He may have been slighted in terms of not getting the starting nod for the NL in this summer's All-Star game, but R.A. Dickey has turned plenty of heads on his own with a 12-1 record and 2.43 ERA in 17 starts this season.

New York Yankees

19 of 30

Song: Good Feeling

Artist: Flo Rida

Early on this season, the New York Yankees found themselves looking up at the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East standing, possibly leaving some to wonder when the Bronx Bombers might come around.

Well, they came around, and with a seven-game lead in the division, they have to be feeling good about their chances of building the gap in the second half.

Oakland Athletics

20 of 30

Song: Cher Lloyd

Artist: Want U Back

The Oakland Athletics showed just how willing they were to make deals this past offseason as they unloaded a number of players, not the least of which was pitcher Gio Gonzalez.

He's off to a 12-3 start this season for the Washington Nationals, and while the team may be happy with the pieces they got in return, you'd think they would love to have that productivity back.

Philadelphia Phillies

21 of 30

Song: Disaster

Artist: JoJo

After a disappointing end to the 2011 season, the Philadelphia Phillies re-tooled their roster enough to lead everyone to believe that they could come back even better in 2012, once again taking their talents to a World Series berth.

It's been a disaster in Philly, however, as Cliff Lee has struggled to get wins, Roy Halladay has struggled to get healthy and Cole Hamels might be on his way out as the team is 14 games out and may be sellers for the first time in many seasons.

Pittsburgh Pirates

22 of 30

Song: Young, Wild and Free

Artist: Wiz Khalifa & Snoop Dogg

The Pittsburgh Pirates are no doubt one of the best stories in baseball as the group of young studs led by Andrew McCutchen finds themselves atop the NL Central division and may be headed to postseason play for the first time since 1992.

San Diego Padres

23 of 30

Song: Back in Time

Artist: Pitbull

With one of baseball's worst records, the San Diego Padres still haven't solved the puzzle in the NL West, and having not made a postseason appearance in nearly a decade, fans would probably love to go back in time when they had much more to cheer about than they do now.

San Francisco Giants

24 of 30

Song: We Found Love

Artist: Rihanna

There was plenty of San Francisco Giants love to go around this week in Kansas City as a trio of Giants stars made a huge splash in the midsummer classic, with Matt Cain throwing solid innings and Pablo Sandoval and Melky Cabrera providing all the offense the NL would need to walk away with a win.

Seattle Mariners

25 of 30

Song: Set Fire to the Rain

Artist: Adele

Sitting 17 games out in the AL West, the Seattle Mariners will need to find something, anything, to keep engaged in the second half.

St. Louis Cardinals

26 of 30

Song: Chasing the Sun

Artist: The Wanted

The St. Louis Cardinals are the defending World Series champions and, despite losing their franchise player in Albert Pujols, are still chasing that same fate once again in 2012, sitting just a few games out in the NL Central.

Tampa Bay Rays

27 of 30

Song: The Fighter

Artist: Gym Class Heroes ft. Ryan Tedder

Playing in the always competitive AL East, the Tampa Bay Rays are always fighting an uphill battle as they work to contend with far smaller budgets.

Still, they always find a way to make it work, and though the team is 7.5 games out in the division, you definitely can't count them out.

Texas Rangers

28 of 30

Song: Feel So Close

Artist: Calvin Harris

Having come so close to World Series championships in recent seasons, the Texas Rangers are back at it again in 2012. Though the resurgent Los Angeles Angels are right on their heels, the team has the look of a champion once again and could certainly find themselves in the fall classic once again.

Toronto Blue Jays

29 of 30

Song: Both of Us

Artist: B.O.B. ft. Taylor Swift

It's largely been a two-man show in Toronto during the first half of the season, with Edwin Encarnacion and Jose Bautista providing plenty of offense to back up their pitching staff.

The team is 9.5 games behind the New York Yankees in the AL East, and if they plan on climbing back into the race, the team will definitely need both of them.

Washington Nationals

30 of 30

Song: Good Life

Artist: One Republic

After making a number of solid moves during this past offseason, the hard work is paying off for the Washington Nationals, who find themselves living the good life in the NL East, four games ahead of the Atlanta Braves.

With young studs like Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper set to lead for years to come, there's plenty of reason for optimism in Nationals Park.
